Second Edition Review:
If you are considering any other book about IDA Pro Don't bother, as The IDA Pro Book Second Edition is the only book on IDA Pro that you will need.

The overall structure of the Second Edition is unchanged, which is not a bad thing. The structure Chris Eagle uses allows for inexperienced users to get spun up on the basics of IDA Pro while allowing experienced users to jump into more advanced topics.

The author has an excellent method of elaborating concepts. A Novice user can easily follow the examples and build knowledge as they dive deeper into the book. Experienced users should not be put off by this, the first half of the book may be aimed at the Novice, but the second half is packed with much deeper information on more advanced topics.

If you've read the first edition and take a look at the table of contents for the second edition you may be deceived into thinking very little has changed. In fact, you'd be wrong as the second edition offers much more coverage of IDA Python. The second edition also brings users up to speed on the latest editions to IDA Pro to include Scriptable Plugins, Loader Modules and Scriptable Processor Modules. The Second Edition has an increased number of examples using IDA Python, whereas the examples from the first editions were largely only in C using IDC /SDK.

The Likes & Dislikes of the book remain the same as my review for the first edition. Although, after considering my only dislike I must admit that my suggestion is somewhat beyond the scope of the book.

Bottom line on the Second Edition: If you are new to IDA Pro you NEED this book. If you are experienced with IDA Pro I still suggest picking it up!

First Edition Review:
I was able to pick up a pre-released copy of The IDA Pro book at Defcon in the vendor area, thanks to Adam from No Starch. This book is not an introduction to reverse engineering, its a hard core manual for IDA Pro. IDA Pro is a critical weapon in any reverser's arsenal, so proficiency in this tool is paramount to your success in reverse engineering. If you are new to IDA Pro you need this book, even if you've been working with IDA for a while you will more than likely learn quite a few things after reading it. Unlike the two other books I've read on IDA Pro this book has no fluff or filler, its solid information! The funny thing when comparing it to the other two IDA books is its thicker than both combined, and contains an exponentially larger amount of information.

The author takes time to explain things in a very clear manner as you walk through from an introduction to the tool to more advanced usage such as customizing, extending IDA, debugging, and dealing with obfuscated code. The author answered questions I had been spent weeks asking and searching the Internet for.

Likes:

Just about everything. The author walks you through plenty of code and discusses scenarios where you could apply the information he is giving you. The fact that he took his time to elaborate on why, and when you might use a piece of information is unlike many authors whom will give you information and leave the reader wondering "What would I use that for".

This book does not just talk about Win32 and Portable Executable format, ELF binaries have a continual guest appearance throughout the book, and firmware/binaries are mentioned in numerous chapters.

Side bar elaboration is kept to a minimum, I often find in texts that an author will go on about background information that does not add anything significant to what I am reading. Chris Eagle keeps this to a minimum adding small side bars when necessary but only take up a small amount of real estate.

Dislikes

My only dislike of this book was the use of PE format as the example in chapter 18 - Binary Files and Ida Loader modules. Despite the use of a well known format chosen for this example the concepts were clearly displayed. I think it would have made it more interesting if the author had used a lesser known format, or do as the author of "Reversing, Secrets of Reverse Engineers" did and create his own binary.

A good book for advanced users and an excellent book for beginners.

IDA Pro is a tool that I always tentatively held at arms length. The magnitude of its complexity and lack of accessible documentation (in the form of vague web tutorials, advanced technical docs that were over my head, and half-remembered bits of advice) kept me from fully embracing this useful tool. Chris Eagle's book is the book I wish I had years ago.

The IDA Pro Book is the first book you should read if you are interested in IDA Pro, or disassembly and reverse engineering in general. It is also a book that intermediate and expert IDA Pro users can learn something new from as well.

The book focuses on IDA Pro, while delving into other related topics (assembly, binary formats, variations between compilers, etc.) to give the reader a general understanding but not so much as to be distracting. There is little fluff material, but plenty of concise, practical examples and scenarios.

As much as I enjoyed The Shellcoder's Handbook and Reversing: Secrets of Reverse Engineering, I would say reading The IDA Pro Book first would be an excellent primer.

IDA Pro is the world's most popular disassembler. This book is for you if you are a beginner or intermediate reverser and you do not already own the first edition of The IDA Pro Book. Much of the second edition is similar, or identical in some places, to the first edition. The IDA Pro Book 2nd Edition does a great job using IDA Pro as the enabling tool for discussing specific techniques of reverse engineering. It is more of a book about reverse engineering rather than a user manual for IDA.

Part I

Reverse engineering may be illegal in certain situations, but the author, Chris Eagle, gives solid explanations of reasons for reversing. Some of the reasons are obvious and maybe a bit scary, such as malware analysis and vulnerability analysis. Other reasons are more related to traditional computer science such as software interoperability and compiler/assembler validation. Like the first edition of the IDA Pro book, my favorite part of the chapter is still the explanations on disassembly algorithms. The author again does an excellent job highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of linear sweep and recursive descent, as well as explaining their differences and intricacies.

Chapter two is spent enumerating tools that supplement IDA in reversing. This is pretty much the same chapter as the first edition, and legitimately so. Beginners and first-time readers will likely find the chapter's contents to be helpful in working alongside IDA. It's worth noting for the chapter that one of the tools mentioned is PEiD, an application to help identify protections and other attributes of a PE. PEiD, however, is no longer developed or maintained as of April 4th, 2011. Instead, I would have liked to see a different comparable tool mentioned, perhaps ProtectionID and/or ExEinfo. No big deal, as stated in the intro, tools change faster than the book can be published. Maybe NoStarch can add a note in the Errata.

Part II

Part II starts by easing the user into working with IDA. Chapter 5 reminds the reader that there is no undo in IDA. This is disappointing for IDA, but an important aspect to keep in mind while diligently assessing a target. It's good to be reminded the easy way as opposed to inadvertently sabotaging a project on which you've spent countless hours. This fifth chapter contains some good tidbits on the user interface. One of my favorite user interface tweaks that I learned from The IDA Pro Book is that virtual addresses can be displayed in graph mode. This helped me combine the effectiveness of visualizing a target's code flow with the benefits of having some good insight into where to look while examining the disassembly. Some of the displays have changed tiers, for example the Strings Window which was a Primary IDA Display in the first edition is now a Tertiary Display with the new UI covered by the second edition of the book.

While much of Part II carried over from the first edition, it was a nice refresher to read the C++ Reversing Primer again. Developers know that C++ has additional features not found in C, such as the 'this' pointer, objects, and virtual functions. Under the hood, a reverse engineer adept at analyzing C applications may not be familiar with the data structures or intricacies used by C++. Chapter 8, Datatypes and Data Structures, does a great job taking the reverse engineer through reversing the aforementioned aspects of C++, as well as name mangling (or name decoration), runtime type identification (RTTI), and inheritance relations, an essential aspect of OOP.

Part II also discusses some of the new graphing functionality in the IDA 6.1 release. As of IDA 6.1, all versions of IDA can now use qwingraph, a cross-platform Qt port of wingraph32. This helps bring a unified look to graphing across all versions of IDA. The new external graphing functionality can still generate the five types of graphs: function flowchart, call graph for the entire binary, cross-references to a symbol, cross-references from a symbol, and a customized cross-reference graph; they just all look a little bit smoother, in my opinion, with qwingraph.

Part III

Part III begins by showing the user different ways to customize IDA. Aspects such as the configuration files, color schemes, and the toolbars are covered in Chapter 11, with much of the information carrying over from the first edition. My favorite portion of Part III, however, is the chapter on library recognition.

When developing software, code can be stored in libraries external to the main program. Sometimes the code in those libraries can also be linked in place into the main program. When this happens, it can add extra work or wasted time if the reverser is analyzing unnecessary functions. For example, most people don't really need to know the nitty gritty details of how MessageBoxA does its thing, but they might end up finding out unwittingly if the function were statically linked. To address this issue, IDA utilizes a signature-based approach with two features: FLAIR and FLIRT. FLAIR is the Fast Library Acquisition for Identification and Recognition, a toolset distributed by Hex-Rays, which can quickly create signatures for libraries and their functions. IDA can then scan the target binary with FLIRT, Fast Library Identification and Recognition Technology, using signatures generated by FLAIR. This way, functions that have already been identified can be recognized and labeled saving the reverser the time and effort of manually analyzing the function.

Chris Eagle does a great job explaining FLAIR and FLIRT, as well as walking the reader through how to use the two features in conjunction. Additionally noted are some cases where identifying the library can be rather difficult; for example, a binary that's been stripped during linking will lack symbols/function names. Chris discusses some different approaches that can be used to figure out the libraries statically linked into the target binary such that FLAIR and FLIRT can then be effectively utilized.

Part IV

Part IV looks into the internals of IDA where intermediate and advanced users will find core functionality to automate tasks and assist with analysis. Chapter 15 examines IDC, the original language used in scripting for IDA. New to this edition are IDC Objects, which, like objects in C++ and Java, allow for more complex data types. IDC Objects support single inheritance, but do not use access specifiers; in essence, all class members are effectively public. The IDC section of this chapter is valuable for both its reference content on IDC, as well as the listing of examples that are provided. The IDA Pro Book 2nd Edition does not come up short on examples.

One of the new parts in The IDA Pro Book 2nd Edition that was fun to read was "Writing a Scripted Loader" in Chapter 18. IDA 5.6 introduced the ability to implement loaders with IDC or Python, in addition to the previous offering of using the SDK. This is great for using IDA to analyze files whose format is not already supported and may be more flexible than what the SDK allows. A perfect example of this is the Portable Document Format, or PDF. PDF is an extremely flexible format that can tolerate all sorts of manipulations to its layout and still work properly in certain reader programs. This presented a challenge to loader authors who could only use the SDK. However, Python provides an adequate feature-set to parse and handle the creation of a PDF loader in IDA. It's also worth noting that processor modules can now be scripted, as well. The scriptable processor modules are covered in Chapter 19.

Part V

Chapter 21, "Obfuscated Code Analysis" contains a nice addition on analyzing virtualized code obfuscation. With virtualized code, think more along the lines of an intermediate language byte code, like a JVM with a .class file. This section covers using functionality, added to IDA after the book's first edition, which makes the reverser's work a bit less stressful. This short new section talks about customizing processor modules, as well as specifying custom formats with scripts and/or plug-ins, to automate the parsing of embedded code. The end result is that both native code and disassembled intermediate code can be displayed coherently.

Chapter 22, "Vulnerability Analysis" examines aspects of determining vulnerable function usage, potential vulnerabilities, and developing exploits, all with the help of IDA. One of the new sections focuses on using PatchDiff2, an open source project that can enumerate differences between two versions of a binary (two databases). Knowing what code was patched in response to a security advisory can significantly help with identifying a vulnerability and developing an exploit in a timely manner.

Part VI

The IDA Pro Book 2nd Edition includes a new chapter on additional debugger features. This chapter starts with remote debugging in IDA, which is a powerful feature if you are debugging code at kernel mode, or if you are debugging a remote target that requires a specific environment in which to function. The chapter then moves into debugging with Bochs, an open source x86 emulation environment. Lastly, the chapter examines Appcall, a feature of the debugger to allow IDC or IDAPython to call any function of the active process from a script. This is an interesting component as Appcall could be used in a variety of manners such as fuzzing functions, DLL injection, and manipulating the target's virtual memory space, just to name a few. In the past, I've mainly used gdb, kd, and WinDbg for remote debugging; but after reading this chapter, I'll need to give remote debugging with IDA another consideration.

Conclusion

Chris Eagle does an excellent job discussing many facets of reverse engineering using IDA Pro. If you are interested in reversing, or are already a beginner or intermediate reverser and do not own the first edition of this book, The IDA Pro Book 2nd Edition is absolutely a must-own.

GETTING TO KNOW MOM AT 91

This is not a book about a famous journalist, nor is it a book about a famous family. THE RAINBOW COMES AND GOES is a story about a mother and her son, and their desire to know more about each. The two live in very different worlds, and have different world views.

It's only slightly relevant that the correspondence took place via email. It doesn't really matter so much. Anderson asks mom questions about her childhood, and the people she knew, and mom gives detailed answers. Some of the questions are startling--questions about death. Anderson asks, "Do you think about death a lot? Over the years you have talked to me about dying many times." Gloria then gives frank answers about her thoughts on dying, and asks Anderson a favor: "I'd like you to place a handful of my ashes in your father's grave."

The fact that both people are world famous is not so much relevant in this book--at least in most cases. One big excepttion is the terrible experience of the custody battle over little Gloria. There are long accounts of the fight, with Anderson asking his mother why it happened, "Why do you think she fought for custody?" Not surprisingly, a lot of money was involved, all about who gets custody of a little, scared girl. "Lawyers were hired, a trial date was set, and both sides began preparing for a court fight unlike any the country had every seen." Anderson's grandmother started a court fight, "for custody of a child she barely knew."

I thought the most interesting question in THE RAINBOW COMES AND GOES was Andersons question, "Do you have any regrets?" Gloria admits that yes, there is a very long list: "For me the list of regrets is so long I wouldn't know where to begin or to end." Gloria then shares a very personal letter "I would write to myself at age seventeen."

In looking over her life, Gloria mentions her recent exhibits of her paintings. Gloria is ever hopeful, ever the optimist: "The phone can ring, and your whole life can change in a blank." She recounts the words of the poet Wordsworth, "The rainbow comes and goes. Enjoy it while it lasts. Don't be surprised by its departure, and rejoice when it returns."

All in all, I found THE RAINBOW COMES AND GOES a bittersweet book. There are lots of very touching, very personal remembrances. THE RAINBOW COMES AND GOES is really most valuable to the mother and her son, but I appreciate their willingness to share such poignant memories with the world.

Wow. A beautiful and engrossing conversation.

WOW. What a great book and is worth a read. It’s sincere and everything that you would hope it would be. There are two aspects to this book, one is a candid conversation between a mother and a son, and the other is…well, a lot of the family gossip. It mirrors the conversations that many people hope that they have once in their lifetime with their own eldest family member, when they themselves are adults.

It is a conversation, but done in the style of Anderson Cooper, almost being his own investigative journalist regarding his own family. However, unlike situations in which Cooper simply asks questions and keeps moving, he discusses his own responses, his own feelings, and explores elements from his own background and experiences. A great example is Cooper mentioning how he was afraid to tell his mom he was gay because of being afraid of how she would react because of the rumors that her own mother was gay. Instead the mother essentially responds with, “Yeah, I knew, all your friends were gay,” and does the motherly thing of refocusing on the question of her son regarding her own mother and discusses her mother’s sexuality and her own views on sexuality, which have changed over the years and views that it is fluid.

There is also some really unique insights into the different family members, providing a history of each one as Anderson asks, going so far as to describe houses and ways that money was made. There is also a slight element of mother’s give a damn being broken at 91 and even letting her son know about sex and the firs time she no longer had to fake an orgasm, which was one of the attractive aspects of who she dated. This is also couched in the context on reflections of her own insecurities being a young girl and growing up, as well as why she stayed in some horrible marriages.

The writing style of this book is easy and fluid. There are interjections in-between conversations that give a quick and easy reference to the backstory of a particular family member or some occasions of the family in general. There are also points where Cooper mentions that he watches a YouTube video that has a family member, or his mother, and it’s actually quite easy to look up that information and follow along. The responses of Cooper are often shorter, but pull in normal colloquialisms, something that shows a bit of a generational divide the two, such as YouTube; whereas his mother may respond with a quote, or just simply go off of the comment mentioned.

Vanderbilt’s responses are much more elaborate, detailed, and a bit of a train of thought around an initial point Cooper asks and that his mother makes a winding way in telling a story, but this is for the best because it is in this portion you can see a lot of recollections about her life, where she has been, and her understanding in hindsight. There is a lot of brutal honesty as well, such as her own insecurities early in life, acknowledgement she probably was not the best parent, recognition that she and Cooper probably would have been closer if he was a daughter, the death of her husband (Cooper's father), and later the death of Coopers brother, Carter (her son).

A great book all around, it gives insight into the family’s meeting of one another, Coopers’ own father, and clarifications on his own understanding of family gossip from years of growing up. There is a lot that may mirror experiences that some adults have been fortunate enough to have snippets of with a family member, but is the extended version of insight into a family that probably has a lot more gossip and rumors surrounding it than one’s own and a few more trips to Europe on whims than most people experience in a lifetime.

Good read, especially if you are already interested in the subjects

No matter how close we are to our parents (as I was to my father who passed away last year at 98) there are still things not said and subjects not fully probed. For example my father had an older brother who like Rosemary Kennedy was born retarded due to a birth accident and also like her was lobotomized and placed in a facility. Although I was nine when he died I never met him and my father and I never really talked about it (though it was always on his mind).
After almost losing his very famous (and very illustrious) mother Gloria Vanderbilt just before her 91st birthday, news anchor Anderson Cooper embarks on his toughest interview via a year-long email exchange. They discuss everything (sometimes to the point of exhaustion): her very tough childhood (including the famous custody trial); her four marriages (Anderson was her last child by her last husband); his father’s sudden and tragic death when Anderson was 10 and how he and his mother began the process of forming a long-overdue mother-son relationship; Anderson’s sexuality (a subject totally missing from his original memoir); and most tragically his older brother’s suicide.
I recommend this book with reservations. While touted as an unscripted email exchange it does not read that way. Gloria tends to explain events with so much background (many of which were already covered in her many autobiographies) that one wonders why Anderson Cooper, an award-winning newsman, did not already know about them. Plus there is so much repetitive detail that you really need a prior interest in both Gloria and Anderson to get through it. But many will find its unique approach both interesting and perhaps cathartic. Personally I wished I had this same exchange with my father.

I received this book on my birthday, which was a great present. I could not put it down once I started reading it. I love how Willie and Patricia were so transparent. I really enjoyed their testimony. I met Willie at my church when he use to work as the Youth Pastor. What I love about him is that he is very friendly. When he speaks to you, he makes you feel like you are the only person in the room. He is very into people, and he truly cares about them. The youth at my church just love him.

I am proud of you Willie and Patricia. I know this book will sell millions and help people.

This book offers much more than a ‘how-to’ approach because it provides a rich conceptual grounding in the rationale for solution-focused counseling. More than any book I have read, this one will help counselors and psychologists make the counseling process pertinent for all youth by helping them to solve immediate, real-life problems. Counselors who apply the strategies presented will help their clients to redefine their own problems as a part of normal life challenges and, in responding to them, build the robust sense of belief-in-self needed to more effectively address challenges yet to come.

I highly recommend this book! It is an essential resource for school counselors and other mental health providers who serve children and adolescents. Dr. Murphy uses the tenets and techniques of Solution-Focused Counseling to provide practical strategies that can be implemented in today's demanding school environments. His examples as well as the troubleshooting tips help the reader understand how to put the Solution-Focused approach into practice in real-world situations.

Jonathan Janz grew up between a dark forest and a graveyard. In a way, that explains everything. So far, he has written two novellas (Old Order and Witching Hour Theatre), several short stories, and one novel, The Sorrows. His primary interests are his wonderful wife and his three amazing children, and though he realizes that every author’s wife and children are wonderful and amazing, in this case the clich� happens to be true.

Calling this "spooky" would only make it sound quaint.

What's better than a spooky old house? How about a spooky old castle? Yeah, that's a good start, but what if the castle is on a remote island? Even better. With Jonathan Janz's debut novel, he presents a horror novel that offers a blend of old gothic chills and modern gruesomeness. But, does the combination work?

The Sorrows is a great evocative name, and just so happens to be the name of the castle in which this story is set, named after a symphony created by a composer named Blackwood whose family owns the estate off the southern California coast. Now, the castle will be the muse for an aging musician under deadline to compose the score for a much-hyped horror film. Ben Shadeland is divorced, and his ex-wife is turning their son, Joshua, against him as she moves in with a new lover named Ryan. So when Ben's friend and collaborator, Eddie, tries to convince him that the Sorrows is the perfect place to get the creative juices flowing, Ben reluctantly agrees if only in part to take his mind off the torment his ex is putting him through. Along for the ride are Claire, an aspiring musician in her own right who idolizes Ben and desperately wants to work with him, and Eva, a seductive assistant to their employer who is tagging along to keep tabs on their progress since Ben has a habit of pushing his deadlines. The four are flown via helicopter to Castle Blackwood where they will reside on their own until the movie score is finished.

At the same time, a young heir and all-round degenerate, Chris Blackwood, has descended into another tight squeeze, in debt with some unsavory characters, and his arrogant tycoon of a father has no sympathy for him whatsoever. As their story progresses intermittently through the novel, it becomes clear that Chris has some traumatic memories stemming from his childhood at Castle Blackwood, and his discovery of a long-lost journal belonging to his great-grandfather's servant--chapters of which also appear intermittently through the book--offer glimpses into the estate's sinister history. At first, the chapters involving Chris Blackwood seem tangential and used as filler, but it becomes evident before long that his path is bound to converge with the Sorrows once more.

Janz crafts a story that initially feels like a familiar one, but by the end of the first act a first swerve occurs and the predictable course of action disappears entirely. And by the end of the novel you realize, the story has gone in a direction you would never have anticipated. Despite some character motivations and behavior that feel suspect at times, his writing kept me off balance, as just when I thought I had the book figured out it would slightly askew and the terror would come from an entirely new direction. I'd go into greater detail on that, but I think readers ought to discover all of that for themselves.

Ben is a great protagonist and easily likable despite his shortcomings. His point of view is only one of a half-dozen or so, however, and the others (especially the journal entries of the Blackwood's servant, which harken to the Lovecraft and M.R. James style) offer a very good rounding of the dominant storyline. As for the chills and thrills, they vary from the classic gothic tension that comes from roaming halls and catacombs of an old castle, to some titillating and/or terrifying scenes that gives glimpses into the dreadful history of the castle and its former residents.

Some of the occurrences towards the end of the book, leading into the climax, strained my suspension of disbelief, but overall I thought this was a strong debut and I'm definitely looking forward to Janz's second outing through Samhain later this year, titled House of Skin--a title that gets its own cameo within this novel.

The Sorrows : Where Your Sins Wait For You

The Sorrows is the debut novel for author Jonathan Janz and man, does he set the bar high! What a great concept and wonderful execution. A band of souls travel to a remote island to stay in an old mansion that has secrets darker than Dracula's castle. Something sinister (is it even the devil himself?) was walled up in the tower room a hundred years ago. There's a beast in the basement and darkness in the hearts of those living trapped on the island. Through the terror thrill ride, there are some deeply poignant moments between the main character, Ben, and the son he fears losing. The ending has all the speed and suspense of a space shuttle hurtling through the atmosphere. This is a can't miss and I can't wait to read his next book.

Blood, Breasts, and Beasts

Joe Bob Briggs understood the importance of the 3 B's - blood, breasts, and beasts - and so does Jonathan Janz. The description of The Sorrows might lead you to believe, as I did, that this novel is an eerie and atmospheric tale. While the book has a dark, eerie atmosphere, it's more fast-paced and gruesome than you might initially expect. There is an erotic tension throughout the story as well, but with the same violence you experience in Richard Matheson's Hell House.

Ben and Eddie are film composers working on a score for a horror film, but Ben has been crippled with writer's block. Thinking a mysterious and haunted castle just might be the place to release his partner's creative energy, Eddie rents out Castle Blackwood, nestled on the island of The Sorrows off the coast of California. But instead of some spooky sounds and doors closing by themselves, the history of the castle - uninhabited since 1925 - is more disturbingly violent and sordid than Eddie bargained for. Accompanied by an actress from the movie and an ambitious composer hopeful, the four go from swapping anecdotes by the fire between sips of wine to a fight for their lives.

Janz doesn't shy away from exposing all the sex and blood of the story. His graphic prose and quick pace reminded this reader of a good ol' Richard Laymon novel. Oftentimes in a Laymon novel you hardly have time to come up for air and Janz' The Sorrows is the same way. As the secrets of Castle Blackwood are revealed, the reader gets closer to the source of evil and up close look at its shocking horrors. There are more than a few stomach-churning scenes that'll make you wanna cover your eyes to protect your innocent mind, but it's kinda hard to read that way!

This is a must for Laymon fans and horror readers who live the Joe Bob mantra; blood, breasts, and beasts!

Weekly tranquility in paper form :)

The inspirational messages in this calendar are wonderful - uplifting, and something to ponder upon. I received this calendar as a gift from a friend, and I am grateful :)

The calendar is perpetual - you choose which page to show each week, and if you like it you can keep it the following week! If you haven't used the day spaces, you can come back and use the page again in the future! In this regard you can get much more than a year's use from the calendar.

There are a lot of beautiful scenes portrayed within the calendar, and the layout if lovely. The images take up both sides of each page spread. There are faded boxes for each week day (starting Sunday) in which to write reminders and such, and one uplifting message per page.

All in all, a very positive and motivational calendar. One thing to note though - I did have to add my own holes in order to hang up the calendar! It was simply a matter of hole punching the edge..

Soothing, Humble, Audacious, A tad intellectual in places...

I find myself returning to this book again and again. On a difficult day, it is a balm to my troubled mind. Bluntly, it is not evident why this book would have a soothing effect. It is, overtly, a bit tedious. Yet for some reason, when I begin reading, it is a balm; more so than other books on the subject; at least to me. I tentatively attribute the soothing effect to the author's insight, his plain and humble concerns, and to the translator's lucid mastery of the English language.

The book is structured as a series of short talks; each talk is usually followed by questions and answers. Overall, the questions strike me as quite astute, and greatly illuminate the subject. The questions are sometimes incredulous, rather than trite or fawningly indulgent (as a cynic might expect).

In this book, Nishijima introduces us to a few of the key persons in Buddhist lore, and elaborates Buddhist ideas. The book is perhaps unfashionably intellectual for a Zen treatise aimed at the common man, but the book is not frivolously intellectual. The author goes on some dubious philosophical diversions so that he can subsequently explain his understanding of Dogen's teachings and the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. This is most audacious! Nishijima offers his own re-articulation and re-construction of the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. As a layman, I find his modest proposal to be useful, and loosely consistent with traditional dogma. Nishijima is not pushy, but offers his alternative re-construction for those who find it to have merit. He also explains why and how he came to his conclusions; and his arguments resonate with me. Even if I choose to reject Nishijima's re-construction of the Four Noble Truths, his writing made traditional elaborations of them more accessible to me. Admittedly, much of this book is merely Nishijima's own musing and supposition. But that is the circumstance in which we find ourselves: thousands of years removed from Buddhist inception; from which teaching occurred largely via oral transmission through the centuries.

Readers who wither when afflicted with intellectual discussion may, ultimately, prefer other books.

Despite this book's subtle virtues, it is not my favorite when it comes to explaining technical aspects of how to practice Zazen (sitting meditation). For learning to practice zazen, I currently favor Katsuki Sekida's book, Zen Training: Methods and Philosophy. That was the book that really helped me grok sitting meditation for the first time. Your mileage may vary.

I advise against reading dogmatically. The goal is merely to point you in the correct direction so that your own practice and experience will be fruitful.

A Clear Presentation of Soto Zen Buddhism by a Modern Master

I felt moved after reading this book to add to the positive reviews that it has received. Having assembled a nice little library of books on Buddhism over the years certainly doesn't make me an expert but it does put me in a position to share my reaction to this book and why it stands out from many others I have read. I have never come across a presentation of Buddhism as clear and useful as the one contained within this book. This is a book that presents Buddhism in a logical, systematic way and I find myself returning to it again and again.
Gudo Nishijima is a Zen master who has held a full time job in a Japanese company for many years. This fact impresses me in that I am able to relate to him better than other teachers who have spent the majority of their time in cloistered monastic environs. Not meant as a knock on monastic Buddhism which has its role to play for sure, but it is refreshing to know that this teacher knows what it's like to grind it out in the modern rat race with the rest of us. He also has an impressive knowledge of western philosophy and history that he uses to great effect to clarify the presentation of Buddhism here. His appreciation for science is very refreshing as well.
This is not a book that I would recommend to someone who is looking for an orthodox academic presentation of Buddhism that might be used as a textbook for a class, that would be "What the Buddha Taught" by Walpola Rahula. This book deconstructs Buddhism down to its essence and presents it logically without all the obscurity and "long windedness" found in many other books. This is one you can really take something from, it has inspired me to stop just reading about Zen and actually start practicing on daily basis.

EXCELLENT !!

This book and along with Kosho Uchiyama's "Opening the Hand of Thought" (in my opinion) are the only 2 books one has to read to truly understand Zen. Nishijima places high importance on 'zazen' which I feel many other buddhist/zen authors unfortunately don't. This book is truly a 'gem' and one that I would strongly recommend to anybody interested in Zen Meditation (zazen). His metaphor of 'meeting the real dragon' and thus living our lives 'head on' (instead of living vicariously through the 'pictures / trophies' we hang in our houses) -- is a priceless teaching !!
