Others are less general, but still cover a broad range of things, such as "hiki", which covers most animals. Some, however, are highly specific (and obscure), such as "rin", which one uses to count fish scales. If this were not hard enough, each counter combines with numerals in different ways, causing changes in pronunciation based on the first sound of the counter and the last sound of the numeral: "ichi" + "kai" becomes "ikkai", not "ichikai", as one might expect. This book will serve as a reference tool for anyone who speaks or writes Japanese, from students to researchers to translators. Each counter has its own page that details how the counter interacts with numbers one through ten as well as other irregular versions. Many entries include extra notes that add context and interesting historical trivia that explains usage development. An extensive Index of English Meanings assists the reader in locating appropriate counters.

Jason Monti earned his first bachelor’s degree in Japanese Language and Literatures with a minor in Asian Studies from the University of Florida. He spent his final year of university at Kansai Foreign Language University in Hirakata City, Osaka Urban Prefecture, Japan, on an exchange program. After graduation, he taught English in Ibara City and Bisei Town, Okayama Prefecture, Japan for three years on the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. He has also traveled extensively throughout Japan, and currently lives and works in Fukui Prefecture.

About the Author
Michael Browning was running Melbourne's Hard Rock Cafe when he first encountered a struggling AC/DC in 1974. When he and the band parted ways five years later, they were on the brink of global domination. Prior to that, Michael managed such local stars as Billy Thorpe and Doug Parkinson.�After a stint in the USA in the early 1980s, Michael returned to Australia, where he launched Deluxe Records, in the process discovering and developing INXS, whom he signed to the label.

Brilliant- a must for art directors and COPYWRITERS

As a professional copywriter giving a positive review to this book might seem like professional suicide, but to be a copywriter is to develop strong CONCEPTS. Part of that is accepting the responsibility of using words effectively on behalf of your client - and sometimes that means using no words at all.

Really, this book is a collection of brilliant concepts that happen not to need much, if any, copy. It's as a conceptual book that this collection of work really shines.

Also, the concepts are diverse enough that they don't become boring or predictable, unlike some other collections that confine themselves to one medium or style of advertising, i.e. outdoor, television or "sex sells" photography.

I have to admit there is a minute amount of copy in some of these ads, but always less than a sentence. Plus, I think a tiny minority of these concepts would have been stronger communications with a hint more of copy.

All of that said, it's a book that every copywriter, art director or person who like to think of themselves as "creative" should have on their shelves.

I'd even go so far as to say that's it's more useful to have this book than the most recent One Show and it's a heck of a lot cheaper - and less likely to disappear.
