“I tried to push him back, but he was too strong, like iron. Suddenly his head snapped up like he heard something; he craned his neck to listen and then he let out a hiss. He kissed next to my ear and softly whispered, “I think breaking you will be much more fun. I’ll see you soon.” And then he added, as if an afterthought, “Tell him hello for me.” Then I felt his mouth lock onto the base of my neck and something pierce my flesh. It hurt. Despite my panic, after a few moments, my heart slowed, and everything became distorted as the blackness came for me.”

After breaking up with her boyfriend, seventeen-year old Aleria “Ali” Hayes finally feels liberated. Unfortunately, her ex’s buddies are not making it easy on her. When his friends harass her one night, a mysterious stranger, Bowen, steps in to rescue her. But just as this new relationship seems to be taking off, Ali is attacked by something far worse than spiteful high school boys. When she awakes, her eyes are opened to a world where gods still walk the earth, where vampires and other immortals fight for supremacy— and where fate may be stronger than free will. Now, Ali must decide who she can trust, and whether the world of mortals is worth saving at all.

Great start to a series and author debut - Spoiler free review
By R.L.K.
I'm a big reader of many genres (YA, high fantasy, mystery, etc.) and this novel stands out to me. I enjoyed that the author, writing in YA, mentioned books and plays young adults and adults alike are like to have read. Literary references without pretension was a big highlight for me. It made me remember a number of required reading books I was given in High School. I also liked that Aleria was older (17-18 years old) and an AP student which allows Woods to write on the older YA side. Smart choice in my opinion. Makes for far more interesting internal dialogue than the average YA that can so often become "woe is me" and over dramatic. No hint of that here.
The Unintended did a good job of introducing the reader to Aleria's world and the world she ultimately finds herself. I also found the vampire mythology to be interesting and one of the more unique takes I've read (or seen). So often in literature and film, vampires are simply magic or the origins don't matter but Woods' take is more realistic and actually made me research on my own. Aleria asked the questions I was thinking. (Hope to hear more about it in the later books!!!)
Pacing was pretty great throughout. By Chapter 3, I cared about the Ali and was interested where the book would go. By Chapter 6, there is no way I could have put The Unintended down. Again, Aleria asks the questions everyone would ask in her situation which helps the world unfold at a steady, digestible pace. Not everything all at once, but one morsel at a time.
I liked that the ending gave resolution to enough of the questions so that this story felt complete but raised enough questions that you don't loose interest by the end of the novel and feel like you have all the answers. Felt like just the tip of the iceberg. I obviously had my theories and ideas but her foreshadowing is not so obvious that it slaps you in the face. Surprises revealed at the end of the novel really are surprises, but looking back they shed light on so much of the story. I'm normally very perceptive with what is going to happen in books (you read often enough and that's what happens) and I was actually surprised by where Woods took the ending. (Don't want to spoil anything but if you read the book, you'll know what I'm talking about)
My only critic would be that there is a lot more talking than action in some sections but overall I think that was necessary to set everything the Watcher world. The Unintended definitely feels like the wind up to a much larger story.
Can't wait to start The Nexus tonight!
(I already read the included bonus material (two different POV's, which I won't spoil!!) and Ch. 1 of Nexus and am extremely hopeful that the books will only get better from here)

Everyone Should Read The Unintended!
By Kyle
I'm a busy guy. I'm picky as well. Something's gotta be pretty great to be worth my time and keep my attention. I'm not a huge reader for this reason. I'm the farthest thing from a Twihard or someone who's typically into any teen romance type stories, or someone who jumps on trendy band wagons, but The Watcher Series is totally different from anything else I've come across.

Why I like The Unintended:
1. Characters are grounded in reality. They are well-thought out with real motivations for their actions. You become invested in their lives and need to know what happens next.
2. It's an easy read. You can motor through this guy cover to cover and onto the next one. I did.
3. Unexpected twists and turns!
4. New and unique take on the vampire genre.

A few reviews of this book are super negative and you know what, some of these negative reviews do bring up decent points. But they're mislead. The Unintended might not be your favorite book of all time. But it's still more than worth reading and here's why: Coming from someone who has read the three books in this trilogy as well as the prequel, and is now even reading the final two books of the series (which aren't out yet at the time this review is being written), I can earnestly say that although The Unintended isn't the greatest masterpiece ever written, Robin Woods skillfully sets the ground-work for what develops into a rich, believable and captivating world with its own lore, deep history and most of all, engaging characters that will stick with you long after you turn the final page.

The scope of this series is so great that it has something for everyone. You seriously will not believe the places this story goes (so far beyond the high school drama of The Unintended). People have pointed out that the series doesn't come out with guns blaring, huge explosions and car chases. But what proper epic doesn't have humble beginnings? Lord of the Rings doesn't start on Mount Doom. There has to be a buildup. A quaint beginning helps the reader appreciate where a story ends up. With every new novel of the Watcher Series, Robin Woods somehow manages to outdo the previous one in every way, all the while getting darker and more mature the further the story progresses. The stakes become higher, the scale becomes grander and the story becomes more and more intense and rewarding to read and be a part of. Pick up this book. And don't stop there. Go onto The Nexus. You won't regret it. Don’t miss out on this series!

Bravo for the Unintended!
By SkyRose888
The Unintended (2nd Edition): The Watcher Series: Book OneRobin Woods' first installment of The Watcher Series, The Unintended caught me by surprise. I don't typically gravitate toward vampire stories, but this tale captivated and held my attention.

I was drawn to the setting of the story since it takes place near my hometown in Northern California (Campbell, CA) and I was entertained by such declarations as the police department being so well-armed that they had a tank in their arsenal. Following the story from the protagonist's point of view kept me engage, since Ali is a very likeable lead. She's entering her senior year of high school and is grounded in her beliefs; her maturity helps to drive the story forward. The author makes references to various literature classics, including Shakespeare and weaves them to parallel the storyline. This works well to cement Ali's intelligence and likeability. The suspected antagonist is introduced early enough to keep the reader engaged, and the love interest slides in seamlessly.

Although some tedious details involving secondary characters could have been left out, they were minor. A few of the characters, such as Ali's school friends, were underdeveloped, and unfortunately, there were too many of them. This wasn't a major flaw in anyway, but more of a minor distraction. All was balanced by the primary arc of the story.

The battle scenes are choreographed in minute detail and I savored these action sequences since they were well written. The author creatively weaves in various subplots and plants enough twists to fuel the series. Ali is enlightened and yet, there are enough unanswered questions to keep her vulnerable and desired. She is not positioned as a heroine, making her more relatable with an alluring mystery surrounding her; the author skillfully opens the door for a lot of discovery in future installments.

I found The Unintended by Robin Woods to be engaging and a fun escape. I can now consider myself a vampire book reader and fan of this dynamic saga. I was pleased the author included a sampling for Book II of The Watcher Series, The Nexus. Bravo!

Thirty-six year old college Professor Ethan Thorpe needs help with his father, so he hires twenty-one year old Brittany Baldwin. Ethan is instantly attracted to Brittany, but knows that nothing can come of it. Ethan has experience, has been married, divorced, and is the father of a toddler. Brittany has no family of her own and develops strong bonds with the Thorpe men. Ethan's grandfather is a delight and he forms strong emotional ties to Brittany as well. Ethan's ex-wife decides she no longer wants to care for their son and turns him over full time to Ethan. Brittany is now taking care of Ethan's father and son. No longer able to control their feelings, Ethan and Brittany have several 'make out' sessions.
This is where I start having problems with the story. Ethan is supposed to be the more mature person, but it felt like it was actually Brittany who was the more mature one. Ethan fires Brittany on several occasions because he couldn't control his hormones. He leads her on through most of the story. His emotions and attitude kept running hot and cold. The story had potential, but it turned out to be not real exciting.

Weeeellll! Can't say it was too bad.
By M. Hartmann
I have trouble with Ethan Thorpe's problem with the age difference. Most men like them young -- although I understood his hangup because of his ex.
Indecisive, wishy-washy, hormones??? Naw! Just not thinking like a man. A man's attitude needs to be researched more for this type of book.
Brittany Baldwin's gentle take-over of the son and grandfather was really great but she wants to let the hormones take over??? Not very mature --
The ex was truly a bit of a witch. Made a good villian. Story not that bad just lacking somewhere. Still a decent read.

Review
This second edition draws readers closer to Wolcott's vision of the interpretive stance that underlies ethnography. In an era when ethnographers may be challenged to articulate how their work contributes to different kinds of knowledge, this book shows the way. (Peter Demerath, University of Minnesota)

This casual yet informed synthesis, written in an egaging style, is what sets Wolcott's book apart from the humdrum of texts that discuss methods formally, often in a staccato, bland, and abstracted tone, usually detatched from application....Wolcott's excursion is a wonderful raft ride through the flows, eddies, and rapids of anthropological experience that is always theoretically informed. (H-Afrarts, December 2008)

My students are always impressed with Wolcott's engaging writing style, wit, and no nonsense approach to fieldwork. Ethnography: A Way of Seeing highlights the importance of creativity and common sense in doing fieldwork. (Douglas Foley, The University of Texas at Austin)

Excellent book; deceptive ad for the Kindle
By Alex Stewart
This is a very worthwhile book by the prolific Harry Wolcott. I would like to warn Kindle buyers though that the edition for the Kindle is the 1999 one. It does say this if you scroll down, but the photo is of the 2008 edition, which is what I thought I was getting. I already have the 1999 one and wanted the newer one. Amazon has been deceptive here; obviously not a fault of the book or the author.

Wolcott helpfully distinguishes between doing ethnography and using ethnographic methods and techniques... of course, the line will always be a bit fuzzier than I think he would like!
Beautifully written for the ethnographic researcher, this is about reorienting oneself for the task.
This is a hefty read - use it for higher level research.

Moroni and the Swastika: Mormons in Nazi Germany, by David Conley Nelson

While Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist government was persecuting Jews and Jehovah’s Witnesses and driving forty-two small German religious sects underground, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continued to practice unhindered. How some fourteen thousand Mormons not only survived but thrived in Nazi Germany is a story little known, rarely told, and occasionally rewritten within the confines of the Church’s history—for good reason, as we see in David Conley Nelson’s Moroni and the Swastika. A page-turning historical narrative, this book is the first full account of how Mormons avoided Nazi persecution through skilled collaboration with Hitler’s regime, and then eschewed postwar shame by constructing an alternative history of wartime suffering and resistance.

The Twelfth Article of Faith and parts of the 134th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants function as Mormonism’s equivalent of the biblical admonition to “render unto Caesar,” a charge to cooperate with civil government, no matter how onerous doing so may be. Resurrecting this often-violated doctrinal edict, ecclesiastical leaders at the time developed a strategy that protected Mormons within Nazi Germany. Furthermore, as Nelson shows, many Mormon officials strove to fit into the Third Reich by exploiting commonalities with the Nazi state. German Mormons emphasized a mutual interest in genealogy and a passion for sports. They sent husbands into the Wehrmacht and sons into the Hitler Youth, and they prayed for a German victory when the war began. They also purged Jewish references from hymnals, lesson plans, and liturgical practices. One American mission president even wrote an article for the official Nazi Party newspaper, extolling parallels between Utah Mormon and German Nazi society. Nelson documents this collaboration, as well as subsequent efforts to suppress it by fashioning a new collective memory of ordinary German Mormons’ courage and travails during the war.

Recovering this inconvenient past, Moroni and the Swastika restores a complex and difficult chapter to the history of Nazi Germany and the Mormon Church in the twentieth century—and offers new insight into the construction of historical truth.

Review
“David Nelson carefully examines the American and German Mormons who developed a small but dedicated cadre of converts in prewar Germany. Nelson shows how, as war became imminent, the Nazis accepted the Mormons and vice versa, whereas some religious communities such as the Jehovah’s Witnesses resisted and suffered greatly. This book’s critical scope, combined with intensive research and thorough analysis, provides a story of stunning breadth and clarity.”
—Robert C. Doyle, author of The Enemy in Our Hands, A Prisoner’s Duty: Great Escapes in U.S. Military History, and Voices from Captivity: Interpreting the American POW Narrative

“David C. Nelson’s Moroni and the Swastika takes us to the heart of one of the most important questions for our age: How could the Nazi horrors have happened and could they happen again? In this book we learn how ordinary good-living people, driven by faith and the leadership of their church, were not only silent but also colluding. Rather than apportioning blame, this story instead leads readers on a journey toward understanding the consequences for believers ‘of conflating God and government.’”—Christine Elizabeth King, author of The Nazi State and the New Religions: Five Case Studies in Non-Conformity

“With his comprehensive consultation of Mormon sources and astute use of recent German scholarship, David C. Nelson gives an unparalleled view of the remarkable way the LDS Church prospered in Nazi Germany while many other religious minorities suffered.”—D. Michael Quinn, author of Early Mormonism and the Magic World View

A Positive Recommendation for a Very Interesting Book
By Susan Emmett
Having been an amateur history buff all my life, I have read many books that portray the good, bad, and the ugly of human behavior through the ages. Having been a faithful Mormon until I was in my 50's, I have always wondered what the story really was about the Mormons in Germany before and during the war. I married a man who served a 2.5 year church mission to Germany in the early 60's, which made me even more curious. He told me on more than one occasion that the members would not talk about that period in their history. He never got any kind of coherent picture of what was going on in the congregations and in the German missions as a whole during the decade before and during the war. I have always been curious about that. This book has filled in a large gap for me about the church there during that time. What is revealed in the book about the Mormons in Nazi Germany does not surprise me, and having known about the Helmut Hubner story, and the actions of the church concerning him at the time, it was fascinating to have the wider picture fleshed out for me. I can't begin to imagine the time spend in research for this book. As a former church member, I felt a conflict about what I was reading. I had sympathy for human beings trying to stay safe, and I saw typical machinations of the church -- both in the actions of some of it's leaders to keep the church alive and well no matter what it took, and creating a gap in that period of German church history that was obvious to me as an adult. As another reviewer has stated, this is not the only piece of Mormon history that has been suppressed almost from the beginning of the church. And THAT is a whole other story! I highly recommend this book.

Great comparison with other religious groups in Nazi Germany
By Jim Vireos
I had heard quite a bit about the interaction between the Catholic Church and the Third Reich, through the Concordat negotiated by the Vatican Secretary of State Eugenio Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII) and German Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen. I have also read about Protestant collaboration with Hitler, through the auspices of Reichsbishop Ludwig Mller. In both cases, there were divisions in Germany's mainline churches. Dissident Catholic and Protestant priests and ministers rebelled. Some Catholic priests and nuns went to concentration camps, while Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed for opposing the Third Reich.

Such was not the case, apparently, with the smaller confessions or "new religions." They either rebelled and were seriously persecuted, or they went right along with the program and got along well with Hitler's government. Author David Nelson demonstrates quite convincingly, in the case of the Utah-based Mormons, that skillful collaboration was possible, even for an American-based sect with thousands of German members who served under American leadership. Unlike the Jehovah's Witnesses, which lost thousands of their believers because they would not salute the Nazi flag or serve in the army, the Mormons actively courted favor with the Third Reich--and in doing so became convinced they they had become one of Hitler's favorite sects.

Then, after the war, the Mormons manipulated their own narrative history by selectively suppressing, and then emphasizing (when the time was right) the few examples of lone Mormons who did not go along with the otherwise unanimous support that the Mormon Church in German gave the Third Reich.

By Grant Harward
An interesting, well-researched, but ultimately biased and structurally flawed book. Nelson addresses a subject that is little known or studied, especially as Mormon historiography is still mainly focused on the history of Mormonism in America. His book is indicative of the greatly changed geographic and demographic membership of the LDS Church in the decades since WWII as today more Mormons live outside the United States than within its borders. An international church needs an international history. However, Nelson's professed hostility towards organized religion in general, and the LDS Church specifically, combined with the lack of context in regards to other Christian faiths in Nazi Germany results in a skewed perspective of Mormonism and its interaction with Nazism. The biggest structural flaw in the book is the fact that Nelson misleadingly compares the LDS Church with the Jehovah's Witnesses. While this may seem at first glace appropriate (both were small, American headquartered, and minority churches) it is a false comparison because, as Nelson admits in the book, Mormon doctrine towards the state is much more in line with the attitudes of the mainline Catholic and Evangelical (Lutheran) Churches in Germany. The Jehavoh's Witnesses stand out almost uniquely among the Christian sects (along with German Quakers) in Germany in their attitude towards the state in general and the Nazis specifically. Mormons should be placed in context with wider Christian responses to Nazism. This lack of context is a severe weakness. Nelson does not even cite Richard J. Evans recent work "The Third Reich in Power," a basic work of synthesis for a popular audience, that has an entire section of the book dealing with religion in Nazi Germany. Nor does he reference the Condordat signed between the Catholic Church and the Nazi regime or the "German Christians" who openly favored the Nazi regime. Vice versa he does not reference the widespread persecution of Catholics who resisted the regime or the actions of the Confessing Church that were also punished by the Nazis. Yet, in his conclusion Nelson argues that Catholics and Protestants did not accommodate themselves with the regime and that they did not suffer for it, and then suggests that the Mormons went further than needed to in order to ingratiate themselves with the Nazis. With more context it is clear that the LDS Church did not have some sort of special affinity with Nazism due to a supposed "Mormon Sonderweg." Nelson is most convincing when he argues that Mormons in Germany under the Nazis acted pretty much like most other ordinary (Christian) Germans: some became convinced Nazis, others resisted, and the majority tried to adapt to the new regime and often, as Richard J. Evans argues, retreated into the private sphere and their private lives. Nelson also claims that the Mormons "prospered" under the Third Reich, but he offers no definition of what constitutes prosperity (wealth? increase in membership? favoritism from the state?) or demonstrate it. Nevertheless, Nelson effectively illustrates the early history of the Mormon Church in Germany during the 19th Century. His exploration of Mormons in Wiemar Germany was also very interesting and his analysis of the "practice run" of evacuation from Germany in case of war that contributed to the safe removal of missionaries in 1939 was enlightening. His chapters on Mormons in Germany between 1933 and 1939 was wide-ranging, well-organized, and indicative of the gamut of Mormon experiences during the period. Nelson does not examine the war years of 1939 to 1945 and its affects on the Mormon community as intensively. The discussion of memory of the war was interesting and suggestive, however it also misses out on placing it within the wider developments of memory in Germany. Frank Biess' "Homecomings" illustrates how Catholic and Protestant Churches were integral in creating a narrative of redemptive suffering and sacrifice in the post-war years. It would be interesting to see how much Mormon memory actually had in common with these wider developments in Germany. Nelson's book is far from the final word on the topic of Mormons in Nazi Germany, nor is it conclusive, but it hopefully it will act as a lightening rod to attract more attention to the subject and foster further research from German, Mormon, and religious historians.
