About the Author
ELIZABETH HARDWICK was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and educated at the University of Kentucky and Columbia University. A recipient of a Gold Medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, she is the author of Sleepless Nights and two other novels, a biography of Herman Melville, and four collections of essays, including Seduction and Betrayal, a study of women in literature that is also published by New York Review Books. Elizabeth Hardwick lives in New York City.

Hardwick, a master of craft and content

Heads up, all of you with M.F.A.s and those aspiring to write narrative non-fiction and autobiography. Elizabeth Hardwick's Sleepless Nights is a masterpiece of the genre avant la lettre. Through an effective use of sentence fragments, notes and letters sent and received, and sketches of people she has known intimately, Hardwick gives the reader a solid picture of New York City in the 1940s and after. But what Hardwick teaches us is that if writing can be taught, it must first be lived. Underneath Hardwick's combination of intimate conversational style and terse analysis of a lost era, one feels the author is a person of stable character, one who is a fully-conscious human being. Stylistically, Hardwick's method of composition is a pastiche of styles, a Post-modern hybrid, grounded in the fierce Modernist belief that every human being is essential to life.

Hardwick conveys human individuality through the technique of synaesthesia, a breathless juxtaposition of noun and adjective; for example, a young man was "a living, sturdy weed of gossip and laughter, of racing confessions about nights of fun and errors, of cooking recipes with unexpected olives, of fish sprinkled with chocolate..." Hardwick excites our desire to know the people she has known. I am a better human being for having read this book.

In a Word: Literature

It took me a long time--months--to finish this little book. It might not necessarily invite intermittent reading, but clearly it's not preoccupied with the striptease of suspense and can be left for days, weeks, for as long as one wants, to be resumed when the mood suits its peculiar but indisputable beauty.

Anyway, it rewards sampling. A couple of passages tonight; more tomorrow night; more again in three weeks.

I always thought, returning to it: How nice to return to this.

In other words, it's not an expedient book. It's generous, leisurely, stylish--I think Hardwick is a topnotch stylist: her line is instantly recognizable (still true today), energetic, American, muscular, yet--here we go--feminine. Pre-occupied with minutiae, humane, not exactly gossipy but certainly concerned with social dynamics, long-suffering, efficient, and elegant.

While not a necessary book, it's emblematic of a kind of American writing that we must not lose. I speak of Thoreau, Whitman, Dickinson, Miller. The autobiographical, the personal, rendered, at its best, acutely, passionately--but without sentimentality; or with sentimentality conveyed with such elegance and lean self-assurance that it a acquires a kind of youthful indisputability--in the sense, I guess, that young love or American power is indisputable. The book is just about beyond logical critique due to its sheer gorgeous intensity.

This is a wonderful gift-book for someone who loves English prose. Hardwick stands with William Carlos Williams as one of our master prose stylists.

Ivo Balbaert is currently a lecturer in (web) programming and databases at CVO Antwerpen (www.cvoantwerpen.be), a community college in Belgium. He received a PhD degree in applied physics from the University of Antwerp in 1986. He worked for 20 years in the software industry as a developer and consultant in several companies, and for 10 years as a project manager at the University Hospital of Antwerp. From 2000 onward, he switched to partly teaching and developing software (KHM Mechelen, CVO Antwerp). He also wrote an introductory book in Dutch about developing in Ruby and Rails, Programmeren met Ruby en Rails, Van Duuren Media. In 2012, he authored a book on the Go programming language, The Way To Go, iUniverse. In 2013, in collaboration with Dzenan Ridzanovic, he authored Learning Dart and Dart Cookbook, both by Packt Publishing.

A Nice First Step

When I learned about the Julia language I was thrilled that there is a community which wants to marry the simplicity and joy of coding in Python/R/Matlab with the power and speed of C/Fortran. This book is a rapid introduction into the basic structure, syntax, and building blocks of the Julia language. The book goes over data/collection types, functions, control flow, metaprogramming, and parallel programming in a first delievery approach. There also are comments and a few pages which provide programming tips on how to ensure top performance of your Julia code.

My main criticism of this book is you won't find detailed examples highlighting what makes Julia superior, which is its multiple dispatch and use of LLVM-JIT compiler. There are also no examples related to technical computing (e.g. numerical algorithms) which I think is necessary to convince traditional user of Python/Matlab and C/Fortran to adapt Julia as part of their toolbox. Overall this is a nice quick introduction to a very promising language and is worth reading if you prefer not to start with the Julia manual.

Great Intro to Julia

Here's 4 things I liked about the book followed by 2 things I didn't

1. The author’s name looks foreign so I was concerned the book may suffer from a poor translation and/or bad grammar. That was not the case. The grammar was on par for a technical book and there weren’t many typos.

2. The topics were presented in a logical order. When the author was forced to mention a topic that had yet to be covered, he referenced the upcoming chapter where it would be covered. This ensures the reader isn’t just left scratching their head.

3. The author used Julia-v0.3 but would mention where he thought something would change in Julia-v0.4. When explaining slices be states that v0.3 provided a copy (by default) instead of a view of the original matrix but v0.4 would return views instead of copies. I tested this with versions v0.3.9 and v0.4.5 and I saw no difference in the default behavior. The author's comment spurred me to read the documentation and eventually I found the explanation (on their wiki). Spoiler, it didn't change in v0.4. The note in the book may have been incorrect but notes like that are very helpful when the language is still under development. Some comments about future releases are going to be wrong because development can change course over night.

4. Each time I referenced the index, I found what I was looking for.

1. So what's one reason not to buy this book or any other Julia book? The language is still under development. This book was published in 2015. I'm reading it in April 2016 and as I work through the examples I'm getting a LOT of deprecated syntax warnings (v0.4.6-pre) and as I pointed out above, some things the author said would be implemented in v.0,4, were not. If you go to the Julia website and click on Docs, you will see a well written and easy to read manual that's up-to-date (of course). You will notice the chapters of the online manual are similar to the ones in this, and other, books. The online documentation has all the information and it's kept up-to-date. Until Julia 1.0 is released, you probably won't do any better than reading the online Julia manual and searching their wiki for answers to your questions. The author used v0.3. I used the latest stable v0.4.6-pre to work the book's examples. At the time I wrote this review, the current version is v0.5.0.

2. A couple places (for example the dictionary example section) give a lot of deprecated code warnings as you try the examples. Then several pages later, grouped in one small paragraph, the author lists examples of syntax, that's already been used extensively in the examples, that would be deprecated in v0.4 along with the new syntax. That information is NOT useful when tucked into a small paragraph several pages after you could have used it. That information should have been included in notes alongside the applicable examples earlier in the chapter.

With a palpable anger, veteran Paul Sgroi depicts his bout with delayed stress syndrome. Thomas Holm, a political science professor at the University of Arizona, reports that Native Americans were told to walk "point"--the most vulnerable position on patrol--because white commanders believed Indians were accustomed to the woods and made good scouts. Le Ly Hayslip writes why the Viet Cong won her loyalty when she was an adolescent near Danang. The failures among the essays are those that try to reduce Vietnam to a manageable equation. Gen. William Westmoreland, for example, argues that the U.S. military was handicapped by the American civilian population.

No Ticker Tape Parades

In "The Vietnam Reader", Walter Capps gathers 36 essays written by a diverse group of writers ranging from theologians to Vietnam veterans on both sides of the war. The writings reveal just some of the complex issues created by the Vietnam War. The essays are at times provocative, revealing, but always engaging. "The Vietnam Reader" offers an exceptional viewpoint on the scars left on both American soldiers and American society by the Vietnam War - scars that have yet to completely heal.

The book is an attempt at healing and dealing with the divisions created by the war. In a sense, it is an attempt to come to terms with the war's effects. Some writings deal with the mistrust of the Vietnam veterans towards their government and politicians during and after the war. Essays cover a time when suspicions and anger hovered over American society. Doubts over America's ultimate goal(s) in Vietnam, the bitterness of many Americans towards draft-dodgers and war protesters, deferments of the educated, and the maltreatment of soldiers returning from an unpopular war are covered in several of the narratives.

The essays are sincere and touching; some also tap on the anger and frustrations of the veterans. James Fallows writes about his deferment from the Vietnam War: "To answer the call [of duty] was unthinkable, not only because, in my heart, I was desperately afraid of being killed, but also because [it was an] "immoral war effort". Fallows adds that his deferment from the war was "the beginning of the shame which remains with [him] to this day". At the other end of the spectrum, William Broyles writes about the "love of war," where he describes it as seductive. "War is beautiful. There is something about a firefight at night, something about the mechanical elegance of an M-60 machine gun". James Quay wrote "that trust between the American government and its people was one of the earliest casualties of the Vietnam War". A nurse that served in Vietnam, Rose Sandecki, wrote on behalf of women who served in the war, that everyone should "understand [that] that war really did a number on all of us, the women, as well as the men".

Other essays describe the turmoil veterans endured upon their return to America, the verbal abuse from their "fellow Americans", their government's lack of interest, the debilitating emotional, mental, spiritual, and/or physical wounds that never quite healed. One essay declared that the Vietnam veteran had in essence become the forgotten soldier. They received no ticker tape parade welcoming them home from a war they were asked to fight - there was no heroes' welcome for the Vietnam veterans.

All 36 essays are noble and worthy of their inclusion in this anthology. I was drawn closer to the compelling essays written by the veterans on both sides of the war, for only they know and can share their stories of pain and anger; their anguish, lessons learned, and healing. How some of them found peace in their visit to the Vietnam Memorial, in Washington, while others traveled over eight thousand miles back to Vietnam in order to find peace and/or to reconcile themselves to a war that ultimately made no sense. During Williams Boyles visit to Vietnam, as a civilian, a former Viet Cong General, Nguyen Minh Ky pointed out to Boyles that "[it] is easier to start a war . . . than to end one".

"The Vietnam Reader" is a book of great significance and should be required reading for those who wish to understand the Vietnam War and its effects on soldiers, citizens and society as a whole. With this guide, small talk can feel effortless and become easy for anyone!

If you're like me, you might struggle to "make small talk" with most people around you. Small talk always felt clumsy and awkward to me. I thought as a teenager I would get better at those little chats with people, but now that I'm an adult the awkwardness never left!

It does not have to be that way! I read the Social Skills Guide: Small Talk, and started putting things into practice over the last few days. I found I started to actually engage people more - among people I didn't know but also with friends and family! I feel more friendly and confident as well.

It's an easy read and you can start improving your small talks with people the same day! So awesome!

Oh my god, yes I can do it.....

The book has been a life changer to me. Of course I thought I would not need to read such a book because I am more an introvert and I actually don't complain about it. I am not really into small talk. Or I should say I was not.

It really helped me to reverse a limiting belief about small talk. As described in the very first chapter, I am the tipical person to think that you loose time when doing small talks. The book opened my eyes and got me to understand that it is just an opener and actually trigger deeper conversation when you start "easy".

Now, I find myself engaging conversation in public transportation or at school while waiting for the kids. And amazingly, it's not just about weather or the latest news. I met very interesting persons and life seems so much easier and richer.

I can only recommend to give it a try.

Small Talk

I found this book very good for those with 'small talk' problems and I am guessing there are a lot more people suffering with this issue than realized. The tips are easy but effective and I have started using them I have been sharing them with my friend who is a VERY shy person so small talk is non-existent for him. He doesn't know about the book so I am doing it subtly and have found he is getting better. I hope he will make more small talk without realizing when I am not around!

I found the part on being the first to move quite interesting in the take that it is more common for women to do so as they like to talk more, or if a man does it he is trying to chat a woman up. Obviously the author corrects this by saying it would be silly for everyone to assume this but it is an assumption a lot of people might come to.

I think this book would be great benefit to anyone who has issues talking to people they don't know but also to people who have to deal with the public every day.

How are there only 5 star reviews?!

I thought the first book was the worst book I had ever read....until I read this one. Again this book has no details nor dialogue. It's a jumbled mess that jumps around without telling the reader much. Just the worst! Then let's discuss things that don't make sense. 1) Michigan who is engaged suddenly is a physco who harbors secret love for Blake and therefore kept up a pretend friendship with Katelyn who didn't even know Blake? What?!? 2) Michigan tells Blake the investigation will end after 48 hours because they don't have anything to go on. He believes her even though there was blood found. 3) Katelyn was an unknown geek but now suddenly she has stalkers galore? 4) Blake fights for their relationship until katelyn decides it's worth it then suddenly he's unsure? 5) there's a point where Blake tells katelyn he loves her "for the first time" but I distinctly remember at least 2 other times they've mentioned love to each other.

And that is where I stopped reading. Thank goodness I didn't pay for these books or I would have demanded my money back.

This book is terrible. It reads like a poorly abridged version of an awful novel. The story line is choppy and doesn't make sense, doesn't flow well. I couldn't even finish and it is very short.

Great Romance Suspense

This series has me on the edge of my seat. Love the twist and turns in this story. Hard to fathom who would want to bring harm to Katelyn, a college chem student? I love following Blake’s quest to make the transition to the NFL. Really interesting to go through the draft with Blake. I’m rooting for Blake and Katelyn as they get ready to move beyond college. Highly recommend.

Brandon Wade is a leading dating expert, and the Founder and CEO of the websites SeekingArrangement.com, WhatsYourPrice.com and SeekingMillionaire.com. As an entrepreneur, he's started numerous internet and mobile companies, as well as retail and tour businesses. Prior to these endeavors, he served as a management consultant with Booz Allen, and held executive roles at several Fortune 500 companies, including General Electric and Microsoft. Originally from Singapore, Wade moved to the United States to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, from which he graduated with a BS and an MBA degree. Since then, he has lived in Boston, New York, Seattle, New Orleans, San Francisco, and more recently Las Vegas.

A shameless attempt to promote his website through his book

I'm all for the Sugar Daddy lifestyle, so my negative comments are only directed at the author and his book. The book is nothing more than a shameless attempt to promote his online website. You'd have to be living in a bubble if you learned anything new after reading this book. There are countless references back to his website, all designed to encourage you join his site and pay monthly fees. He even goes so far as to say that searching for the right arrangement could take a year or more, so you need to be patient. Oh, how clever!. I suffered through each excruciating chapter hoping there would be some glimmer of insight, something that I could use to justify the money I paid for the book, but nothing came of it. Save your money, there are no secrets to success in this book.

Don't bother

I was hoping this book would suggest some good approaches to writing to women on the site but it did not. All the suggested rules were just obvious things like, "Don't ask for nude pictures", "Don't be crude", et cetera. I believe it was written by someone involved with ownership of the site, so any advice would have to be "Taken with a grain of salt". I found nothing useful in this book.

More than just a guide: an excellent book.

I saw this book featured on the 20/20 piece about SeekingArrangement with John Stossil, and I must say it both shocked and intrigued me. I thought "before I actually delve into this sugar daddy dating world, why not read the book first" - I'm a workaholic and always do my homework, especially before investing in any lifestyle change.

Indeed, it's because I AM a workaholic that the mutually beneficial dating concept coined by SA intrigued me...
This book is way more than just the best ever "how to guide" to sugar daddy dating, but actually gives insight into why, or why not, making mutually beneficial arrangements is right for you.

This book deserves way more attention than it's getting - it is a comprehensive, genuine, all around guide and companion for anyone interested in non-traditional sugar daddy/sugar baby type relationships. I actually didn't know that I was stuck in a 'limerent' relationship for 2 years until reading the book, which, by the way, defines and classifies a variety of relationship types that many if not most of us have found ourselves in - whether we knew it or not.

Thanks to reading this book, I knew exactly what to look out for, what to expect, how to negotiate an arrangement, and how to be in-tune with what a potential sugar babies needs would be as well.

I found the "When the Sugar Sours" chapter especially useful for me - nothing lasts forever, and this upfront and honest approach to dating is compatible with that fact. I am glad to say that despite my initial fears, this book is not tinged with self-promotion or BS. If you're serious about becoming a 'sugar', this book is definitely worth buying, keeping, and sharing.
