,b>A Country Mouse Story

A magical weekend, a breathless declaration, a happy ever after . . . Right?

Wrong.

When Malcolm Kavanagh took his first step toward emotional maturity by declaring his love to Owen Watson, that was just the first chapter in their story. Anyone who’s ever been in love knows that happy endings take a lot more work than that.

One problem: Malcolm has never been in love. He doesn’t know the rules of a relationship and isn’t confident enough to trust that his is real. He learns the ropes by sharing his life and his flat with Owen, but relationship boot camp proves a challenge. Everything is a struggle, from accepting Owen’s low-status job to putting his boyfriend above his personal trainer.

Luckily, Owen knows a little more about relationships, and labors patiently to survive the first six weeks of their life together. From the art galleries of Cambridge to the tawdry majesty of the Dominion theatre, Owen adapts to England while Malcolm adapts to the whole human race. Maybe, if Owen is patient enough and Malcolm learns to give, the two of them can make it past Relationship Armageddon to a real happy ending.

This story is a sequel to City Mouse. Both novellas are included the Country Mouse: The Complete Collection bundle.

Fabulously sexy story
By The Romance Reviews
Amy Lane is one of my favorite writers by far, and her first partnership with Aleksandr Voinov resulted in one of my favorite books, Country Mouse. Now, this dynamic duo are back to bring us the continuing saga of their two unlikely lovers, and the results could not be better.

Uptight Brit Malcolm Kavanagh puts everything on the line to declare his feelings for his new American lover Owen Watson. While the scene was perfectly set for a happily-ever-after, real life isn't that simple. Now that Owen has decided to stay in London with Malcolm and start a life with him, the fairy tale has given way to the reality of low-paying, demanding jobs, navigating London's social scene, and reaping the rewards of sharing a life with another person.

But while Owen has managed relationships in the past and knows the kind of effort it will take to make it through his first six weeks, Malcolm has never allowed anyone as close as Owen. For him, learning the giving and taking, the opening and sharing involved in a real relationship is terrifying. But these two have what it takes to stay together in spite of it all...right?

Owen and Malcolm are both such brilliantly crafted characters that it's impossible not to fall for them and cheer as they find their way together. Owen is genuinely sweet and patient, but is also wonderfully self-reliant and resilient. There is a constant concern that he will be trampled underneath Malcolm's bluster, but he stays strong though it all, and his subtle manipulation of his surly Brit is sheer genius.

Despite all of his outward defenses and bravado, Malcolm is by far the more complex and fragile in this relationship, and watching him find his way into a relationship was heart-rending and beautifully rewarding. Both these authors have a wonderful talent for displaying their characters in all their flawed, loveable and sexy glory, and Malcolm is a perfect showcase for their talents.

Though this is a fabulously sexy story, at its heart, it is a true love story--the kind of love that endures in spite of fights and disillusionment and pettiness. There is no doubt whatsoever that both Owen and Malcolm are better people together than apart, and that they are genuinely happy and fulfilled by the other. But when the curtain closes on the final scene of most romance novels, this book picks up, showing how that love works on a day-to-day basis. The results are adorable, touching, funny, and heartbreaking, and addictively readable.

As before, London itself is also stunningly portrayed in all its tawdry glory here, making for a vibrant setting as real and familiar as the two characters who make their way around it. I can't recommend this book more highly, or thank these two authors enough for exploring this love story even more. The insight that Amy Lane & Aleksandr Voinov have into their characters at this point give them the chance to explore their relationship even more deeply, and while I would gladly follow Malcolm and Owen for years to come, I couldn't have been more pleased with this story and the chance to spend a little more time in their world.

An Outstanding Sequel to Country Mouse

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

When Malcolm Kavanagh chased down Owen Watson in the middle of a train station and told Owen he loved him just as Owen was about to leave London, well that is the HEA moment always envisioned at the end of a romance novel. But for Malcolm and Owen, life is what happens next. For Malcolm, he is on new territory as he has never been in love or even a relationship before Owen. Now Owen is living in his flat, and Malcolm doesn't really know how to handle things, even something as simple as eating breakfast together.

For Owen, Malcolm is the man he has come to love and stayed in London for. Luckily for them both, Owen not only has experience with relationships, and a great Mom to ask advice from but Owen realizes that Malcolm has some growing to do and he is willing to help him through the precarious first steps of a serious relationship. His mom said the biggest obstacle to overcome will be Relationship Armageddon, when you've reached the sixth week, the honeymoon phase is over, and reality sets in. Owen has a new job, and patience, lots of patience. But when the stress of Mal's job combines with the strain of adjusting to a new relationship, will Owen's patience and love be enough to help the couple struggle through to a real HEA.

When I love a book the way I did Country Mouse, I always approach its sequel with a little trepidation, even with such wonderful writers as Amy Lane and Aleksandr Voinov at the helm. You always wonder if the continuing story will measure up to the joy and outright affection you have for the original. Well, I shouldn't have worried, because the fates of Malcolm and Owen are in wonderful, capable hands and I might even love Malcolm's story a tiny bit more.

Haven't you always wondered what happens after boy gets girl or in this case boy gets boy in the romcoms in the theatre or on TV? In City Mouse we get to see what happens after that wildly romantic gesture when Mal runs after Owen, catches up to him in the train station and declares his love for Owen. Usually its "cue the music, close the curtains, The End" time but now we pick up the story two days after Malcolm's declaration of love. The boys are living together in Malcolm's high end flat and Malcolm is getting ready to resume his routine, a routine that now must make room for Owen in it. And to say that Mal is extremely uneasy about the whole thing is putting it mildly. This is how City Mouse opens, with Malcolm already in high stress mode:

The bad thing about a fictional Chinese prawns food poisoning was that it couldn't possibly outlast a real one. Malcolm had done his research on the internet, and a real food poisoning would be over in a day or three. Another problem was that he felt guilty for having left the trading desk. He should be at work.

Oh, but Owen was so sweet in bed.

That's where they'd gone right after the train station, where Malcolm (Malcolm!) had poured his bloody heart out and begged Owen not to leave. Bed. There would be time to hammer out the details later. Time to figure out jobs and schedules and Owen's place in all of this? But Owen was here, in Malcolm's penthouse, and that's where they stayed for the next two days.

But today, he had to go to work.

Malcolm got out of the shower, shaved his maddening dark stubble carefully, and combed and gelled his hair until it would stay perfect for the rest of the day. He had one clean suit left, and the rest needed to be serviced. God . . . four days, five nights he'd spent playing. And now his life was falling apart.

Okay--that was a tad dramatic. But he did need to do some dry cleaning. And--

You can almost hear the hyperventilating begin....it's funny, it's realistic, and in its own way kind of heartbreaking. I love the character of Malcolm. He has so many mannerisms and attitudes built in to his personality that help to protect him from hurt and his past although he would be the last to admit it. As written by Land and Voinov, Malcolm is a complex, flawed and, for me, wonderfully appealing character. He so wants to be loved and for his relationship with Owen to work, if he could just figure out how to bring that about. The authors make sure the reader sees Malcolm's vulnerability even as he is spouting off nonsense about Owen's less than chic address at work or the clothes that Owen wears. Lane and Voinove make sure we see that there is a reason for Malcolm's shallowness even if we don't know just what propels it forward. And the authors make us laugh while they are making Mal stress over something else that Owen has done. Here is Malcolm meeting Owen at the coop he is working for. Malcolm has entered the Happy Endings Little People's Club adoption agency inhabiting the third level floor of the building:

Happy endings. Little people.

A world full of baby photos. Adorable infants. Blonde girls. Middle Eastern boys. Happy families. Kids cuddling teddy bears.

Would he make it to Owen before he developed diabetes?

"Hullo, luv," said the matronly woman at the desk. She smiled up at him sunnily, revealing large teeth, slightly protuberant eyes, and a suit that dated back to the seventies. "Can I help you?"

He felt the beginnings of sugar shock just looking at all of that maternal goodwill.

"Uhm, I was looking for--" "Owen!" she crowed. "And you must be Malcolm. We've heard so much about you!" She pitched her voice to one of the hidden back rooms. "Owen, your boyfriend's here. And you're right. He does look like a snake that swallowed a lemon!"

Malcolm was shocked out of his irritation. "I do not."

Owen's throaty laughter emanated from the room, followed by Owen himself. "You do too, Mal, and you know it. Come on back. Thanks, Emmaline. I didn't want to miss him.""

Oh, I don't think you could do that, dearie. He is very good looking, just like you said."

Owen winked, his sweet brown eyes wicked under the fall of hair. "You don't think I would have stayed here if he'd been homely, do you?"

I loved that interchange, it tells us so much about Malcolm and Owen. Despite being out of his comfort zone, Malcolm has travelled into the *shudders* lower income region of the city just because he wants to see his lover. And Owen has already been filling in his new coworkers (and friends) on Malcolm, enough so that they recognize him before he introduces himself. Lovely dialog, lovely and funny setting, and memorable characters all in one great scene.

Everything about City Mouse rings true, from the slow fumbling towards a real relationship that speaks of permanency to the authenticity of a tour through the many sections of London. Owen and Malcolm do not have an easy time making their adjustments to their new status although Owen has more experience than Malcolm. But Owen too has his own insecurities about his new situation. A phone call or two to his Mom helps but only so much. I do love his mother, she is such a great character of her own, she almost needs her own story. But Owen never comes across as "too good to be true" to me. He knows his limitations and Owen also realizes how much personal "loosening up" Mal needs to do before their relationship can grow. Realistically, Owen hopes that it will happen but he is never quite sure that it will. Again, a lovely testament to the writing skills of Lane and Voinov. We believe in this relationship and the men involved because they are so real. That "realness" makes it easy to engage the readers affections and keeps them connected throughout the story to the end.

City Mouse clocks in at 160 pages, almost twice the length of Country Mouse, and the longer story length was necessary to more accurately portray the relationship dynamics in play after the grand romantic gesture is done. I don't think a shorter version would have let us see into all of the problems and issues that had to be resolved before the boys could settle down realistically and happily in London together. But time and type (and two wonderful authors) gave us exactly what Owen and Malcolm needed. We get the joy and fun of watching two great endearing characters fight, cook and love their way to a more authentic relationship. One that has a far better chance at succeeding than the point that we first left them at. And that makes this book a real winner for me, and hopefully for you as well.

There are some scenes with a mild bdsm content. Those readers uncomfortable with bdsm sex scenes should not have a problem with the content here. It is mild and does contribute to some very hot love making between Owen and Malcolm. Grab the fans, you will need them.

Pick up Country Mouse and City Mouse and have yourself a wonderful time. Here are the books in the order they were written and should be read:

Opposites do attract
By lovestodive
Authors Amy Lane and Aleksandr Voinov team up bringing us the sequel to Country Mouse - City Mouse. Fans of both authors will enjoy this sometimes lighthearted, sometimes serious look into the beginnings of a relationship between a successful British banker and a somewhat wide eyed American IT specialist.

Once Malcolm Kavanagh got over his stiff upper lip British reserve and let American free spirit Owen Watson into his life, heart and flat things were supposed to get easier for both of them. But as everyone knows "the best laid plans of Mice and Men" rarely go as they should and once over the honeymoon period, relationships aren't always as easy as planned. Malcolm has everything he thinks he wants, a well-paying job, a penthouse flat, a trainer with an attitude and a young lover to welcome him home at nights. Unfortunately, Malcolm has control issues, he always has to be the one in control and if he isn't he doesn't know what to do. When Owen moves into his flat and into his life, his world is turned upside down.

Owen doesn't care about money; he wants to use his IT expertise to work somewhere that he will be needed and that he can enjoy the people. He just wants to go to his job, come home to his lover and enjoy life in a new country and he will if he can just get Malcolm to understand there is more to life than money and what it can buy.

Both men will struggle to come to terms with the other's way of thinking and both will do their best to make it through the dreaded six week relationship test.

You can never go wrong reading anything written by either one of these authors; both are masters of their crafts and know their way around the written word. Amy Lane is capable of taking one's heart, ripping it out of your chest, squeezing as hard as she can then gently repairing the damage and placing it back where it belongs. Aleksandr Voinov can write just about anything he wants, he gives the reader dark and ugly as well as beautiful and haunting, he knows no boundaries and keeps readers on their toes at every turn. Combine the two and normally you might need a therapist and stock in a tissue company. Thankfully, they took mercy on the reader and gave us an almost light hearted romp through the romantic minefield of relationship 101.

It was just fun watching Owen get under Malcolm's skin and watching poor Malcolm trying to figure out what he was supposed to do. I have the first book in the series but didn't read it on purpose in order to see if this novella could stand on its own. It does, I had no problems figuring out who these men were and understanding what they were about.

This is a quick, easy read with just enough of Ms. Lane's signature angst and Mr. Voinov's darkness. Readers of M/M erotica will enjoy this story. As with most of the books penned by these authors, there are some explicit M/M sex scenes, which are well written and not offensive, but almost beautiful in the their execution. Pour a glass of wine, settle in front of the fireplace and enjoy watching these two men figure it out.

One River, by Wade Davis

The story of two generations of scientific explorers in South America—Richard Evans Schultes and his protg Wade Davis—an epic tale of adventure and a compelling work of natural history.

In 1941, Professor Richard Evan Schultes took a leave from Harvard and disappeared into the Amazon, where he spent the next twelve years mapping uncharted rivers and living among dozens of Indian tribes. In the 1970s, he sent two prize students, Tim Plowman and Wade Davis, to follow in his footsteps and unveil the botanical secrets of coca, the notorious source of cocaine, a sacred plant known to the Inca as the Divine Leaf of Immortality.

A stunning account of adventure and discovery, betrayal and destruction, One River is a story of two generations of explorers drawn together by the transcendent knowledge of Indian peoples, the visionary realms of the shaman, and the extraordinary plants that sustain all life in a forest that once stood immense and inviolable.

Amazon.com Review
Best known for The Serpent and the Rainbow, Wade Davis is an ethnobotanist interested in the native uses of plants, especially psychotropics. He finds many such plants in the travels he recounts in One River, especially coca and curare. (The first, famously, is a curse in the First World but is a necessity in the Andes, where it promotes the digestion of many kinds of food plants.) Framing Davis's narrative is an account of the dangerous World War II-era Amazonian expeditions undertaken by his mentor, Harvard biologist Richard Evans Schultes. Davis describes a few hair-raising encounters of his own, making this a fine book of scientific adventure.

From Publishers Weekly
The prodigious biological and cultural riches of the vast Amazon rain forest are being lost at a horrendous rate, according to the author, often without yielding their secrets to the Western world. During his years in the South American jungle, ethnobotanist Davis (The Serpent and the Rainbow) has done much to preserve some of these treasures. He tells two entwined tales here?his own explorations in the '70s and those of his mentor, the great Harvard ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes, beginning in the '30s. Both men have been particularly interested in the psychoactive and medicinal properties of the plants of the Amazon basin and approach their subject with a reverence for the cultural context in which the plants are used. The contrasting experiences of two explorers, a mere generation apart, starkly demonstrates how much has already been destroyed in the rain forest. Although Schultes probably knew more about Amazonian plants than any Western scientist, he was constantly learning of new ones and new uses for them from native experts. Davis graphically describes the brutal clash of cultures from Columbian times to the present, often so devastating for indigenous peoples, that has defined this region. At times humorous, at times depressing, this is a consistently enlightening and thought-provoking study. Photos not seen by PW.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
While not technically a biography, this is the story of Timothy Plowman, a young ethnobotanist who died while looking for medicinal plants in the South American rain forests. The author, who explored with Plowman in 1974 and 1975, tells a vivid story of adventure, Amerindian culture, and, to a lesser extent, the social and political climate surrounding Harvard in the 1960s and 1970s. Plowman was the brilliant protege of Richard Evans Schultes, one of the world's leading authorities on hallucinogenic plants and the Amazon rain forest. The author mixes the backgrounds and travels of the two men with sociology of South American tribes and their sacred plants. Because use of hallucinogenic plants is described, this is not a book for young people. For adults, it's a fascinating story of ethnobotanical exploration and an excellent real-life tale of science out of the laboratory, and only peripherally the sad story of a brilliant life lost to AIDS (Plowman contracted the disease as a result of pretrip inoculations). It also reveals the effects of development on the dwindling rain forests and their endangered cultures. Recommended for large collections.?Laura E. Lipton, Center for Urban Horticulture, Seattle

This is a good book.
By readsalot
I gave it five stars but is was not as good as the "Serpent and the Rainbow". Also two other things bothered me, one the strong focus on drug plants and highs, two that the author's explorations contributed to the exploitation and subsequent destruction of jungle and peoples. Otherwise the book was very entertaining, informative and about a place no-one can return to.

Eloquent and marvelous
By S. Bombaci
An eloquently written, marvelously depicted dual-vantage excursion into the heart of the Amazon, its mysterious cultures, and the powerful medicines they have wielded for millennia and which we Westerners now seek for spiritual and psychopharmacological purposes. Schultes was a brave adventurer and scientifically experiential genius, and Davis his apt pupil.

An Anthropological treasure of experience and historical notability
By Paul Lerma
The book was very informative on history of US interactions in South America through anthropologists, mainly ethno botanists, for rubber and medicines. Much citing of peer review journals. A great read with extremely detailed history, geographic and botanical information.

From the Author
This Pride and Prejudice variation is a light-hearted story withmild angst. The characters remain largely faithful to Jane Austen's originals. The story has some romantic scenes, but is mostly clean.

About the Author
Nicole Clarkston is the pen name of a very bashful writer who will not allow any of her family or friends to read what she writes. She grew up in Idaho on horseback, and if she could have figured out how to read a book at the same time, she would have. She initially pursued a degree in foreign languages and education, and then lost patience with it, switched her major, and changed schools. She now resides in Oregon with her husband of 14 years, 3 homeschooled kids, and a very worthless degree in Poultry Science (don't ask). Nicole discovered Jane Austen rather by guilt in her early thirties- how does any book worm really live that long without a little P&P? She has never looked back. A year or so later, during a major house renovation project (undertaken when her husband unsuspectingly left town for a few days) she discovered Elizabeth Gaskell and fell completely in love. Nicole's first two published books are her pitiful homage to two authors who have so deeply inspired her.

An entertaining first foray into P&P by the author.
By Jana
I've read my fair share of P&P alternate stories and sequels (dozens and dozens of them, really), and this is one of the good ones, with a few caveats. Some spoilers ahead.

Congratulations to Ms. Nicole Clarkston for her first published P&P variation! In 'Rumours & Recklessness' we find Darcy and Elizabeth suddenly engaged, although not by your typical compromise or wayward seduction. The main time frame for the events of this book begins on Wednesday, 27th of November, the morning after the Netherfield Ball, and continues in the days and weeks immediately following (I'm almost certain the main plot of the book occurs in the span of 2-3 weeks, give or take a few days).

In the wake of an accident that leaves Mr. Bennet comatose, Mr. Collins seizes an opportunity and attempts to publicly engage himself to Elizabeth. Mr. Collins believes the uncertainty of Mr. Bennet's health will aid him with his suit. Darcy (who is witness to this event along with Bingley and the rest of the Bennet ladies) cannot bear to think Elizabeth attached to such an odious man for the rest of her life. By this time we know that Darcy is in love with Elizabeth but he hasn't quite acknowledged it yet. So of course, to save Elizabeth from Mr. Collins and to secure her for himself, Darcy suddenly interjects and says that Elizabeth has already accepted his marriage proposal and is now engaged to him. We know that Lizzy has done nothing of the sort and she is most certainly not happy with Darcy's interference! And so our stage is set and the misunderstandings and drama ensues. It was very enjoyable to read this alternate way of how our dear characters come together, fall in love (on Elizabeth's part), and resolve their problems. While this book focuses mainly on Darcy and Elizabeth, several others get their own stories told.

The usual cast of supporting characters make their appearances. A more decisive Bingley (I quite liked this version of him) sends for Colonel Fitzwilliam and Georgiana to come to Netherfield to help pull Darcy out of his funk after Elizabeth gives her "fianc" the set down of his life ( la Hunsford). Colonel Fitzwilliam is a true friend and like an older brother to Darcy, a relationship I appreciate in adaptations. He is also one of the main sources of comic relief and I was often smirking when reading those scenes. Georgiana remains a constant once she's introduced, and I enjoyed her relationships and development with the other characters. I like how Mary Bennet subtly becomes one of Georgiana's supporters, a "dispassionate bodyguard." Wickham is true to form, causing mischief and spreading tales to the detriment of our hero characters. Caroline Bingley is her usual jealous and vindictive self but her actions aren't without consequences. Lady Catherine and her vitriol is an excellent (and surprising) source of comic relief and I'm glad that she gets a set down in the end. Anne de Bourgh is shown to have more gumption than she initially appears, although I'm on the fence about the twist concerning her.

Like others before it, this book contains some notable lines and phrases from the original P&P, although this didn't happen too often and I believe these instances were mostly effective. I appreciate that the first chapter focuses on Mr. Bennet and Darcy, especially since it's uncommon in most variations for these two to actually have a conversation without subtle teasing/jabs taking the fore. Mr. Bennet's accident renders him absent for most of the book so I really like the insight to his character/personality in that first chapter.

The pacing is mostly steady; it's slow-ish in the first act as there is a lot of introspection on the parts of Darcy and Elizabeth but I didn't mind too much as these insights were necessary for the development of their later relationship. I like that Darcy and Elizabeth come to an understanding somewhere in the middle of the book, allowing room for other plot lines and hijinks to occur as the story reaches its climax. And just because Darcy and Elizabeth have accepted each other, it doesn't mean that their path together is without its hardships; the drama continues! We know that they'll get their HEA but it's all about the journey in this novel.

There are no sexually explicit scenes, so no worries for those who could do without them. Once they've reached an understanding and Elizabeth has truly welcomed Darcy's marriage proposal our two lovebirds find time to steal kisses and make-out. In retrospect I don't know if Darcy or Elizabeth would risk to be found in as many compromising situations as they were in, but who can resist their tender moments together?

I will say that the book would've benefited from additional editing/proofreading as I came across some errors that I've highlighted while reading on Kindle. One of my pet peeves is that when Elizabeth is addressed so, it is "Lizzy" and not "Lizzie," as Lizzy with a Y is used in Jane Austen's original text. However, I will concede to what each author/writer decides to use, as long as they remain consistent in their address throughout the entire story. On several occasions, I've found both "Lizzy" and "Lizzie" being used by the characters, sometimes these two spellings appearing on the same page. Lieutenant Denny of the militia regiment is also referred to as "Denney" with only a paragraph in between. Darcy and Elizabeth encounter Sir Lucas on one of their rambles, but then Elizabeth suddenly met "Sir Lewis' eye." Miss Anne de Bourgh has been elevated to Lady Anne de Bourgh. Sir Lucas is incorrectly referred to as a peer. There are a few scattered grammar mistakes (using I versus Me, among others) and a couple of occasions where certain titles/addresses should be capitalized but are not. There are also a few anachronisms in word use (gold digger, mail-order bride, and some others). I am a nitpick when reading but overall these errors weren't so bad in terms of understanding the story. I just hope that authors will continue to research and proofread a story several times so that less/none of these mistakes are found in publication.

SPOILERS:
Some plot points could've been handled better, used more details, or had a more defined resolution. Darcy writes a letter to Elizabeth early in this story but The Letter here is reduced a MacGuffin, a bit disappointing considering the importance of The Letter in the original P&P. Also, what exactly happened with Mary King? I feel like the explanation for her circumstances was rushed and a bit confusing. Charlotte Lucas' storyline could've been handled with more care. She is later paired off but even this seems a bit forced, just so that she wouldn't remain a spinster daughter. I'm not too fond of the twist concerning Anne; it seemed a bit tacked on as a last suspense element. If the backstory/buildup to this twist was somehow integrated into earlier chapters, I may have been more accepting of it. Even if supplemented with additional buildup, the twist is so different from canon that it may be especially hard for some people to accept. There's also a scene where Wickham mistakes Anne for Georgiana; it takes him a while to realize his mistake, such are the ladies' supposed similarity in appearance. This detail bothers me in relation to (SPOILERS) Colonel Fitzwilliam confessing to having a tendr/attraction toward Georgiana. He does acknowledge that his feelings for Georgiana aren't right (in relation to her being his ward and that he is twice her age). Later in the epilogue we find out he is engaged to Anne. For some reason, the inclusion of Wickham mistaking Anne for Georgiana made it seem to me that Fitzwilliam just transferred his attraction from Georgiana to Anne. There wasn't much interaction between Fitzwilliam and Anne, even though it's implied (I guess) in the epilogue, and that leaves me feeling like their pairing together is a bit too contrived in this instance. Does this nitpicking make sense?
END SPOILERS

Overall, I did enjoy reading this alternate path to HEA between Darcy and Elizabeth. I read the entirety of the book over the course of one day. I was compelled to turn the page and didn't gloss over paragraphs or sections (which I've had a tendency of doing lately with a few P&P/JAFF stories). For some this book may seem a bit long but I usually prefer them this way. Despite some mistakes that could've been caught by another proofreader and my own nitpicking at certain story lines, I do recommend everyone to take a chance on this author's first foray into published P&P fiction. Good job, Ms. Nicole Clarkston!

A well done retelling of a favorite classic!
By Dave in Oklahoma
This is a very pleasant novel! I like how all the characters follow canon from the original. Some smaller characters are added to support the well known cast and it is done seamlessly. There is a ton of conversations and they are done in a smooth manner. Some phrasing from the original shows up occasionally but it is small snippets and they are mostly reworded so you get the original meanings with fresh wording. The plot follows along at a nice pace and there are no grammar issues or holes in the storyline. All is well thought out and executed in a professional manner. I like the Darcy and Elizabeth characters - you are rooting for them to overcome obstacles. Of course there is the required HEA, but what twisted path will get them there? What happens to the other players? There are some nice differences for you to enjoy. I rate this story a keeper!

Rumours & Recklessness: A Pride and Prejudice Variation
By Kindle Customer
Enjoyable story. A little chaos develops in the front parlour at the Bennet home. Unbeknownst to Elizabeth, Collins decides that he will announce his betrothal to Elizabeth. While she angrily says she will not, Mrs. Bennet is screeching that she will. Bingley, Jane, and Darcy are shocked at this development, especially Darcy who has admitted to himself that is in love with Elizabeth. While his mind is arguing with his heart, he surprises everyone in the room that she cannot marry Collins, because she is his betrothal. If Elizabeth was simmering with disgust about Collins' announcement, she's an erupting volcano at Darcy's statement. That everyone was is shock is an understatement, except for Mrs. Bennet who recognizes that Darcy is far better a catch than Collins. When facing Darcy the next day while out walking, Darcy approaches to offer a proposal. While not quite as bad as the Hunsford proposal, it still contained his ill spoken words as to family, fortune, and status. He gets the shock of his life when she responds to his proposal and slaps him across the cheek when he steals a kiss. Hurt and dismayed, Bingley finds him well under the influence of alcohol when returns to Netherfield. Meanwhile, Bingley has contacted Colonel Fitzwilliam and Georgiana to come help Darcy win Elizabeth's love. Elizabeth and Georgiana quickly become friends which makes Darcy extremely happy. When she finally is told the truth about Wickham, her feelings for Darcy begin to change rapidly. Elizabeth is in charge of running Longbourn while her father is recuperating from his fall from his horse. Listening to her Aunt Gardiner who has traveled from London to help, she suggests that Elizabeth ask Darcy about the tenant that has been unable to work the land for a year and is behind in rent. When she sees what he has done, she falls completely in love with Darcy. Caught in the middle of the road kissing by her Uncle Gardiner, much needs explaining. Well kind of Pride and Prejudice variation would it be without the evil 3 musketeers: Aunt Catherine, Caroline, and Wickham. Enjoyed seeing the three despicable fail at their betrayal. The Earl and Lady Matlock are two of Darcy's relatives, besides Georgiana and the Colonel, that are completely taken by Elizabeth's obvious love for Darcy. Oh, Lady Catherine has a terrible secret that she thought was only know to herself, but the Matlocks and Anne also knew of her shame. Enjoyed the story although some typos were noted, but they did not detract from the story. Loved how Darcy set up Mrs. Bennet, Lydia, and Kitty to spread rumours about Wickham. Kind of funny he caught Wickham with his own game: spreading rumours.
