So he took a journey both southerly and inward, through Mississippi, where his parents grew up and where American racism has been most entrenched. His tale meanders, combining travelogue, interviews, meditation, even his own poetry (awkwardly used to punctuate sections); one section consists of a chorus of voices, including those of Faulkner, Ellison and bluesman Robert Johnson. Certain moments resonate, such as Walton's visits to a historically preserved plantation and to the Ole Miss campus, full of Confederate memorabilia. He comes to appreciate the enormous effort of his "taciturn, often remote" father to give his son the privileges he himself never had. One of the best books I almost never read!

WONDERFUL! I read this book twice in two weeks and could read it again. This should be required reading at every high school in the country. Being new to Mississippi, I was looking to find out more about my home state and picked this book up at the library. Thinking it was a travel guide, it sat on my bedside table for a week until one night I picked it up and found everything I was looking for. Thank you Mr. Walton

Jeff Colgan is an Assistant Professor at the School of International Service at American University in Washington DC, where his research focuses on international security and global energy politics. He has published work in several journals, including International Organization, the Journal of Peace Research, the Review of International Organizations and Energy Policy, and his article on petro-aggression in International Organization won the Robert O. Keohane award for the best article published by an untenured scholar. Dr Colgan has previously worked with the World Bank, McKinsey and Company, and The Brattle Group.

solid analysis

Colgan asks whether "petro-states" are more war-prone than non-oil states. He notes that while modern petro-states have initiated several wars in recent decades, some have not, like Saudi Arabia, a major oil producer. His key variable is revolutionary leaders, whom, as he notes, are more risk-prone than tradional leaders like Saudi Arabia's Al-Saudi family. Thus the combustable combination of revolutionaries like Khomeinei, Qadhafi, and Saddam Hussein and a dependency on petroleum for more than 10% of GDP are the key ingredients for war-proneness. This is a well researched book with both theoretical chapters and case studies that probe the details of petro-aggression decisions. Essential for students of war and of the Middle East.

Good thesis, but not sold on the argument

This book is a welcome addition to the literature; as the author notes, “the academic and policy discourse about the role of oil in world politics has traditionally been dominated by a single narrative about resource competition. One contribution of this book is to highlight how narrow that narrative is.” Yet the book’s contribution comes more from its focus on the links between oil and conflict, rather than by proving the thesis that it is postulating.

The book kicks off with a big thesis: petrostates (states where oil exports exceed 10% of GDP) are more likely to initiate inter-state conflict than non-petrostates; moreover, petrostates with revolutionary governments are even more aggressive. The prima facie case for this statement comes from a powerful chart, showing that petrostates are involved in conflicts more often than non-petrostates, and, more importantly, they are significantly more likely to start conflicts. When you mix oil dependency with a revolutionary government, you get an explosive mix. Jeff Colgan also lays out a plausible causal link for this: oil income reduces domestic accountability and hence lowers the costs of foreign policy adventurism, while revolutionary governments are generally led by risk-taking individuals. So far, so good.

The trouble comes, in my mind, with the testing of the thesis. The quantitative model makes (inevitably) a number of judgment calls, which I just happen to think weaken the thesis. In particular, by treating “petrostate” as a binary variable, the model ignores how changes in a country’s oil revenues might impact its behavior. Interestingly, Mr. Colgan notes that, “it is … unlikely that there is a tight correlation between changes in oil revenues and the state’s propensity for international conflict” (p. 50). But even in the case studies in this book, one could plausibly see such correlation (for example in Libya and Iran).

The biggest problem, however, comes from a sense that the thesis is built on a very narrow empirical foundation. The core argument is that revolutionary petrostates are highly aggressive, but on closer look, it appears that Iran, Iraq and Libya account for three-quarters of all the data points. To his credit, Mr. Colgan recognizes this: “the overall above-average rate of international disputes is driven almost entirely by the small subset of revolutionary petrostates, which are extremely aggressive” (p. 73). Yet one is still left wondering whether this thesis is essentially a very elaborate way of saying that Iraq, Iran and Libya have been, at times, overly aggressive.

In fact, Mr. Colgan decided to not classify as revolutionary governments that founded a state (for good reasons, to be sure). But this decision becomes problematic for Saudi Arabia, which could plausibly be considered a revolutionary government but is not for the purposes of this book. By using Saudi Arabia to show “the difference a revolution makes,” one feels somewhat tricked by a definitional, rather than substantive, point. The same problem can be said for the case study on Venezuela where the author amasses all sorts of data points to support his claim that the country pursued an aggressive foreign policy (the oil for doctors trade with Cuba, for example). Again, one feels a slight stretch to make the point. Nor is there much explanation of how revolutionary governments mellow down (again, Iran and Libya come to mind).

Despite these shortcomings, this is an excellent book that elucidates the linkages between oil and aggressive conflict in very important and innovate ways—even if it does not quite settle the subject (at least in my mind).

Food writer Dunlop is better known in the U.K., where her comprehensive volumes on Sichuanese and Hunanese cuisine carved out her niche and eventually became contemporary classics. Turning to personal narrative through the backstory and consequences of her fascination with China, she produces an autobiographical food-and-travel classic of a narrowly focused but rarefied order. Dunlop's initial 1992 trip to Sichuan proved so enthralling that she later obtained a year's residential study scholarship in the provincial capital, Chengdu. There, her enrollment in the local Institute of Higher Cuisine, a professional chef's program, created a cultural exchange program of a specialized kind. The research for and success of her resulting cookbooks permitted Dunlop to return to China in a more experienced role as chef and writer; that led to this reflective memoir, which probes into the author's search for kitchens in the Forbidden City as well as the people and places of remote West China. One key to this supple and affectionate book is its time frame: by arriving in China in the middle of vast economic upheavals, Dunlop explored and experienced the country and its culture as it was transforming into a postcommunist communism. I love it!

I loved this book from the get-go. Fuschia Dunlop is erudite, adventurous, well-read and open and her intelligence sparkles in this memoir. It is years since I added to my overburdened cooking library but this is a gem that I will treasure and which has sent me off to examine in detail many previously unexplored sections of the chinese supermarket. She is an evocative writer and the contexts and stories she relates add greatly to the dishes.
For those that are cooks - I should add that a Chinese friend hand-carried some Sichuan Peppers from China which are so explosively different from the ones I purchased from chinese stores in Australia, US and Germany. To put it in context, crunching a single raw pepper of the authentic version is enough to leave the lips and tongue anaesthetised and tingling for 15 minutes. It is really worth to experiment with different peppers to look for ones with a kick.

Excellent culinary memoir

First off I should say that I love eating in China. In fact, that is what I most look forward to when I am heading to China. The variety and quality of the various cuisines in China is truly extraordinary. I really related to this book, not only for the eating adventures, but also because I also was once a young student in China trying to figure things out around me. Dunlop was a young girl studying Chinese in Chengdu when she became distracted by the heady smells and tastes that surrounded her. She enrolled in the local cooking school and dove headfirst into the wonderful world of Chinese cuisine, specifically 川菜 chuāncài, or Sichuan cooking, in her case.

What makes this book so readable, and persuasive, is Dunlop's ability to engage the reader with personal and intimate stories of regular people and homestyle cooking. As a speaker of Chinese she is able to share experiences with ordinary Chinese that would not be possible without a knowledge of the language. For example, she befriends the cook at the local noodle shop and eventually persuades him to give her the recipe for his famous dandan noodles, which she shares with the reader. I know I have said this before in other book reviews, but knowing Chinese really opens up all kinds of doors and allows one to experience a China that would not be possible if you did not know the language.

She correctly states on page 206, "Food has always been of exceptional importance in Chinese culture. It is not only the currency of medicine, but of religion and sacrifice, love and kinship, business relationships, bribery, and even, on occasion, espionage. `To the people, food is heaven,' goes the oft-repeated saying." Though the book focusses on Sichuan cuisine, she does give insight into China's other culinary traditions as well.

The book is engaging, entertaining, and very informative. It is obvious that she has done her homework and knows her stuff. She gets added credibility because she experiences all this first hand while she lived in China and on subsequent trips back after returning to the UK.

The reader comes away from this book fascinated with Chinese food, and really hungry. The food she describes in the real thing. This is a well written memoir and I highly recommend it.

The reader is skillfully seduced into following this well rounded erudite chef/author as she wanders through familiar and unfamiliar foods and landscapes with nary a dull passage or pretentious insight

"This is an example of the most recent and best teaching methods

On a trip north from where I live in Mexico, I picked up this book for my Mexican goddaughter who was then ten. She is now 12 and taking extra curricular classes in English. When she took this book along to show to her teacher he was very enthusiastic and approved her using it in class. The teacher said, "This is an example of the most recent and best teaching methods. I only wish I had enough copies for all my students." I was very happy to have discovered this book in the states!

Great book for the classroom or student struggling on his own,

I have a TESOL certificate (UCR) and speak several languages. Foreign language study and students are not new to me, For several weeks here in Panama, I have been helping in an English conversation class. Without a text and with students at various levels of English, it was quite a challenge. And then I found Ingles Para Latinos. Students can study the book at home, learn at useful vocabulary, and try out new sentence structures in the classroom. Even with the cost of postage to Central America, the book and shipping do not put a strain on the pocketbook. A good command of English here is considered the equivalent of a second college degree. This book means more than just a good and painless way to learn English, It is the key that will open doors in the near future to better jobs and a higher standard of livng.

I do not recommend self-study, but the phonetics used in the book come close to having a teacher to help with pronunciation. (As you are aware, there are sounds in English that do not exist in Spanish, and English spelling is so different from how words are pronounced that beginning students must learn their pronunciation word by word. The text, however, does a great job showing how the vocabulary is pronounced.)

Nobody in the book, thank goodness, asks if the fountain pen of your aunt is on the table. The examples make sense and can be put to immediate use. The vocabulary is so practical, so useful in real life situations. The author even included hand gestures. There are even games.

I wish the book had more indepth conversations at restaurants, stores, churches, parties, etc. A number of students asked for help greeting customers, talking about the "special of the day", giving instructions/directons, etc.

Professor Harvey has made the study of English accessible to Latino students while making life a lot easier for the volunteers who use his book.

The book is good by itself

The book is good by itself, but the CD's do not match the book and must go with another version of the book. I returned the book and asked for an updated version and the same book was sent again. Since I am working with ESL students this is very frustrating. I haven't found a way to get any help with this after a month of returning and reordering so guess I'll just look elsewhere. Too bad, because the book itself is good and I had high hopes for the CD's.
