Finally a real-world, no-nonsense, practical understanding of what it takes to become an actor

Most acting books are great, they inspire, feed the desire to follow your dreams and give you an adequate understanding of techniques, skills, etc that can make you a great actor. Great, thanks. But how do you actually apply it to advance your career??

No one ever talks about the reality of the journey you're embarking on. Whether you're thinking about getting into acting or a veteran, How To Be An Actor does exactly what it claims; it equips you with the (at times daunting) steps you MUST take to not only survive, but prosper as a working artist. You have to be skilled in different areas: understand what the director actually does, how the producers really see the project, (most appropriately) how to attack castings....it demystifies the industry and shows you everyone is just doing their JOB.

The book allows you to develop a confidence and comfort with yourself to where very few things in life will affect your "performance." "Being an actor isn't something you turn on and off" you have to live it every day! Some of the best advice I've ever been given. I feel it's made me "better" at life (a grandiose claim, but true).

The journey is difficult, extreme, and takes an immense amount of strategy to succeed...the book outlines all of this and gives you the expertise to accomplish and keep moving forward. It's real, it doesn't sugarcoat a thing, something we VERY RARELY see nowadays. Ralph really knows what he's talking about and I feel fortunate to come across the first book that actually tells me the truth.

Once you train and apply everything (or even just some) of what the book recommends, you'll never look back because the future is too bright!

A must read

It took me 2 hours to finish reading this book- amongst running errands and squeezing something to eat. I think the structure of the text was well put and gives aspiring actors/actresses a deep inside look to what it takes to be an artist. But above all, it reaches in a more profound way than I though; it captures the ability to make you understand yourself. It was unnerving reading at first because there were a lot of certain point that made me realize how negative I can be sometimes. I learned to have more confidence in my craft and in myself. Learning that it's okay to have a dream and that if it's not big enough, dream bigger! I really enjoyed it. Kudos!!

INFORMATIVE. A MUST BUY!

This book is/was very informative. It's very easy to understand the concept of a working actor and for a starting actor as well. It grasps all the tools that an actor needs. I have read this book twice now and it surely refreshes my mind. I am fortunate to have read this book by Ralph Kinnard, he's very passionate in what he speaks about. I highly recommend this book.

Susan Thurman has taught English grammar from the junior high school level to the college level. [CT]Writing Better Sentences

Certain elements can either make or break a sentence. If a sentence contains a misplaced or dangling modifier or is essentially illogical, it becomes confusing at best and ludicrous at worst. Some brief sentences, called fragments, don’t contain a complete thought and are not really proper sentences at all. At the other extreme, a writer may sometimes string several thoughts together to create an endless—and grammatically incorrect—run-on sentence.

This chapter will give you some pointers for looking critically at your sentence construction as well as the tools to fix any problems you find. Knowing what makes a proper sentence will ensure that your writing (and your reputation!) remain solid.

[H1]Misplaced Modifiers

Simply put, misplaced modifiers are words or phrases that you’ve put in the wrong place. All of your words—whether they’re single words, phrases, or clauses—should be as close as possible to whatever they modify (the words they describe or give more information about). Take a look at this sentence, written with a single word in the wrong place:

After her wreck, Joanna could comprehend what the ambulance driver was barely saying.

The way the sentence is written, the ambulance driver is barely speaking—but surely that’s not what the writer meant. Barely is out of its correct place because it modifies the wrong word. It should be moved so that it modifies the verb could comprehend. The sentence should be written this way:

After her wreck, Joanna could barely comprehend what the ambulance driver was saying.

Misplaced modifiers can also be phrases, as in this example:

Witnesses reported that the woman was driving the getaway car with flowing black hair.

A car with flowing black hair? Really? With flowing black hair is in the wrong place in the sentence and should be placed after woman. That way, the sentence would read:

Witnesses reported that the woman with flowing black hair was driving the getaway car.

Clauses, too, can be put in the wrong place, as in the following sentence:

Mrs. Anderson could not stop thinking about her sick baby running in the six-mile road race.

That’s quite a baby who can run a six-mile road race (even while being sick). The clause running in the six-mile road race is out of place; it should be closer to the noun it modifies (Mrs. Anderson). The sentence should be reworded this way:

Running in the six-mile road race, Mrs. Anderson could not stop thinking about her sick baby.

One of the most common problems with misplaced modifiers comes with what are called limiting modifiers—words like almost, even, hardly, just, merely, nearly, only (only is the one misplaced most often), scarcely, and simply. To convey the correct meaning, limiting modifiers must be placed in front of the words they modify.

Take a look at these sentences:

Already, Mr. Goulooze has almost eaten four slabs of ribs!

How does a person almost eat something? Did he have great willpower four different times? More likely, the sentence should be reworded to say that Mr. Goulooze has eaten almost four slabs of ribs.

Richard has nearly wrecked every car he’s had.

Has Richard nearly wrecked the cars—in which case, he should be grateful for his luck—or has he wrecked nearly every car? Remember to always watch out for misplaced modifiers (as Richard should probably watch out for oncoming traffic). Otherwise, you may end up wrecking nearly every sentence you write.

This book is too short to cover all of the topics and does not go into enough detail It is condensed. I would suggest purchasing The McGraw-HIll Book of English Grammar and Usage, along with this book and workbook, should you need more explanations on some of the topics. The McGraw-Hill Book even provides tests you can use if you are uncertain of the different types of speech. However, I will say that the commonly misspelled words in this book is more comprehensive than any other grammar books I've taken a look at recently. The workbook also provides a lengthy test of commonly misspelled words, which I found very helpful. If you want to get even deeper into the subject and and are interested in word usage and style and editing, don't forget to take a look at Strunk & White's "The Element of Syle" and then move onto June Casagrande (I would suggest "The Best Punctuation Book Period."). Every author has something to add. This is by no means the only grammar book you will ever need, but it will help guide you and provide a helpful start. Oh, and then there's a few more on proofreading and editing books if you want to brush up your skills. I did like this one; however; as I noted earlier, it provides a long list of the most commonly misspelled words, and believe me, they are up-to-date. I just thought that the textbook with explanations is too short if you are planning on reading some of the copyeditors' books at length.

All Over the Place but Beholden to None

My greatest complaint about this book is that it tries to do too much. It's supposedly a concise book that one can use to quickly find answers about grammar. I found the sequencing disorderly and confusing, and many of the descriptions used are flat-out wrong (in professional writing and editing, anyway), confusing, or simply irrelevant/unhelpful. The problem is that often the description is useful, but the example given is so incredibly bad that one wonders if they missed something. Nope—it's just a terrible example. For instance, in the section on plural possessives, the author correctly points out that plural possessives are usually formed with an apostrophe but not 's' on the end. Then she gives an example "trick" to help the reader find the plural in this sentence: "The girls jackets were left in the coatroom." The "trick" is then to turn the sentence around so that it reads "The jackets of the girls were left in the coatroom." NOW you know that "girls" is plural. Really? All that noise related only tangentially to the actual point—how to punctuate plural possessives, NOT how to find plural nouns (as if finding the word with the "s" on the end is like divining water or casting magic spells). My guess is that readers will be more rather than less confused after reading this section.

Meanwhile, the author adds sections about predicates, gerunds, and similar concepts that most beginning students will find quite difficult to understand because they are more nuanced than simple subject–verb constructions. She's all over the map in terms of who this book is intended for.

I understand the book was published some time ago, but several discussions about layout and style may not be completely wrong, but are definitely ill-advised. For instance, do we really want to teach writers that there is such a thing as a "compare-and-contrast" paper? Talk about redundant. Professional writers and editors do not use "compare and contrast," because they recognize that comparing includes contrasting by definition. And the whole "five-paragraph" essays smacks of the worst of what we teach students and businesspeople. Such an approach to writing is redundant, overwrought, and wordy as hell. Good writing does not need to repeat itself twice to make a point.

And finally, from a personal standpoint, having someone else read and provide feedback to your writing is not always "peer editing." Often it is simply editing. To assume the person reviewing the work is a peer is a stretch; and besides, if you're a beginning writer, do you really want one of your peers to be your reviewer/editor?

Get Bryan Garner's MODERN ENGLISH USAGE or his book on grammar published by University of Chicago Press (not CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE but rather the smaller yellow book on grammar). Though longer books, they are way more accessible, better organized, and provide better and more concise examples that normal people can actually understand.

Easy, pleasant, and EFFECTIVE book

This is the first grammar book that I actually read all the way through. Prior to this, I didn't even know what adverbs or conjunctions are.

I had an English teacher say my writing is perfect. Off course it's not, but I was happy because it's my first time receiving such compliment.

I learned from this book that English is actually easy and pleasant to learn if you have a great teacher like Susan Thurman. I can't remember struggling at all, and I actually had a pleasant time.

So I recommend this book fellow ESL who want to brush up their grammar for their career or personal benefits.

After this book, if you like to improve your grammar to the next level, there are other simple, direct, and fun books I recommend: The Blue Book of Grammar by Jane Strauss and Beyond Prepositions by Thomas Celentano.

The Blue Book has lots of rules not covered in Thurman's book (and vice versa). Thurman's and Strauss' books compliment each other. But these two books don't cover the actual prepositions because you'd need about 100-200 pages for it.

Just like the two grammar books I mentioned, Celentano's Beyond Preposition is simple, easy, and pleasant to read.

Mystery Novel about Washington Intelligence

This 1974 novel used sources like "The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia" by Alfred W. McCoy, and the others listed in the 'Preface'. It takes place in Washington DC. Ronald Malcolm works for the "American Literary Historical Society", and reads detective and mystery novels to summarize its plots for his employer. One day their new accountant tells Malcolm there is a discrepancy in the records; of seven crates shipped from Seattle only five crates arrived in Washington. This had not been noticed previously. The accountant reports this loss in a memo.

Malcolm reports to work on Thursday. It is his turn to go out for sandwiches for lunch, and he uses a basement exit for a short-cut. He also runs an errand. He returns to find the front door locked; he has to use his key. Then he finds that all of his co-workers have been killed by professional assassins. Malcolm leaves the building and calls the "panic number" from a public phone to report the maximum damage; he is told to disappear and call back later. When Malcolm calls back, he is told to make contact in an alley of a Georgetown theater. But his rescue team takes a shot at Malcolm, who fires back, escapes, and goes to ground. Will Malcolm be rescued by he CIA or found by the killers? And who is the double agent?

After you read this novel you can better understand the film, which is a simplified and condensed version (called "Three Days ...). The story was changed from drug smuggling (to censor drug references?), and relocated to NY city. This story seems implausible to me, since eliminating the one link in Seattle would avoid the furious investigation that would follow a massacre of seven in Washington DC.

Condor is the code name for an employee of the CIA. His mission is to read, read everything he can to see if there are any subversive codes being posted in innocuous looking literature.
The new accountant discovers that the number of packages shipped to his location do not match the bill of lading and tells Condor hoping to get his view on if he should tell the boss. The accountant bypasses his immediate boss and brings this to the attention of his superiors in Langley.
One day Condor leaves the building for lunch by an un-recorded unauthorized back door. On returning he finds everyone dead.
Who did this and who can he trust? To survive he must use his wits and what he has learned from his reading.
A movie "Three days of the Condor" is based on this book, which is really first in a series of books, sort of like the James Bond series. Naturally being film media the story needed cutting down to size, hence three days instead of six. Robert Redford has to squeeze James Grady's "Six Days of the Condor" into the Redford mold. The book plot of drugs and Viet Nam are out. Redford's substitute plot of oil and Arabs is in. Bad guys differ. Great acting, great actors and a few faux pas, such as if they knew there was a back door to the location, don't you think it would be watched? In the movie, Tina Chen (Janice) can be seen again in "Paper Man" (1971).
Reading a later introduction in the book by James Grady the plot was changed because of the politics of the day at the time of the film Viet Nam was out and oil was in. Also the drug-of-choice in the book was change.

Three Days Not Long Enough

Condor reads spy novels for a living, picking out the neat twists and checking that no spooks have spilled the beans on sensitive government information. He doesn't seem too bothered by the fact that he works for the CIA, until he gets back from buying lunch one day and finds everybody dead.
From that moment things get hectic, first he is hunted and then he becomes the hunter as he figures out how to use his skills and knowledge against a shadowy coalition of G men and assassins, and tries to discover why they want him dead. The story rattles along and drags you with it, and whilst the movie is better paced, the book is still well worth the trip.

Good rather oldfashioned Zorro!

I love all the great new artists like Jason Shawn Alexander, Mike Mignola, Frusin and many others but my heart beats in a special way when Esteve Polls (The Lone Ranger) does the art because it gives memories to good old Dell Comics and Classics Illustrated. Polls is close to the art of John Severin and that is super. The story is good and the coloring so fine. It is great to ride with Zorro Again!

About the Author
Robin Hammerman is Teaching Assistant Professor in the College of Arts and Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology. Her research and teaching interest in Ada Lovelace began during the first years of her service to the Byron Society of America as Director of Membership and Academic Services as well as when she began teaching courses to engineering students at Stevens such as Science Fiction and Literature, Science and Technology. Hammerman's ongoing commitment to promote interdisciplinary engagement among women in STEM fields inspired her to organize the first international conference on the legacy of Ada Lovelace in October 2013. Andrew L. Russell is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Program in Science & Technology Studies in the College of Arts & Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology. He is the author of Open Standards and the Digital Age: History, Ideology, and Networks (Cambridge University Press, 2014) and has published over a dozen articles and book chapters on the history of the Bell System, the American system of voluntary standards, modular design, and the computer networks such as Cyclades and the Internet. Russell currently serves as the Chair of SIGCIS, an international collective of historians of computing and information.

Zander Wheeler knows they’re out there: shape shifters, vampires, and other things.

Having lost his wife over a year ago, Zander finds himself seduced by a married man. Ashamed, Zander asks his friend Logan McByrne to help him sever ties. Logan agrees, and in doing so, reveals a whole new world to him. Zander learns that his lover is a vampire, which is why he’d become so enamored with him. Then, Logan hooks up with a wolf shifter, and to top it off, a massive winged creature—the gargoyle Geoffrey, according to Logan—is claiming he and Zander are mates.

When Zander demands they all leave him alone, save for Logan, they agree. Still, some sixth sense tells Zander he hasn’t seen the last of Geoffrey. He’s right. When one of his billy goats becomes aggressive, Geoffrey swoops in and saves him. With Geoffrey keeping to the shadows, they begin a dialogue. The more they talk, the more Zander realizes they may not be all that different after all. Except, he’s already been played by one paranormal. Can he open his heart to another?

Not LIke the Good Old Days

You know, I normally love this author's books; I probably have everything available by him on Amazon in the past couple of years. He has been one of those authors where I just automatically buy his books when they come out. And like the other reviewer, I have greatly enjoyed the gargoyle storyline. Having said that, it seems like the last few books have been, as they say "phoned in." The plots and characters have less depth, the books are shorter (for the same price) and the books just don't grab me like in the past.

I'm sure I'll continue to purchase many of this author's books, but not automatically anymore. I enjoyed this author's other recent release much more than this one, and I used to really love the Stoneridge and Kontra series. Makes me sad.

Manipulated to love

I purchased this book awhile ago when I was in the midst of reading the A PARANORMALS LOVE STORY series. I even began reading it, but set it aside until two weeks ago, when I bought the next in the series, A HOT BLOODED ALLIGATOR.
I had been waiting for the Gator's book for some time.

Anyway getting back this book, can you imagine suddenly being thrust in the paranormal world? To not only witness things that can't exist to being told you have unwittingly been a Vampire's little honey snack. Even when you try to break up with the philandering Vamp you still don't know why you can't Just Say No. That is until your whole world imploded! Not only were you attacked by a Wolf that turned into a man, your charismatic lover turns out to be a honest to goodness blood sucking Vampire! As if that weren't enough your best friend (Logan) becomes involved with the Wolf Man and is being followed by a flying Gargoyle. OMG!

And now that Gargoyle was claiming to be his "mate"? Is it any wonder Zander wanted to be left alone once the Wolf pack no longer held he and Logan captive? He tended to his goats and fretted about the impossible things that had been happening to him. He was still so angry about what occurred with the Vampire, he couldn't stop thinking about it. In particular how he'd used his special powers to compel Zander to keep seeing the Vampire even when he wanted to stop - tried to stop.

The Vampire forced Zander to let him in his home so he could feed from him. He hated the sneaky paranormals that took advantage of poor innocent humans who had no idea they even existed. Zander was annoyed that even though he stayed out of sight, the Gargoyle was still lurking around. Why didn't they leave him alone?!

Lucky for Geoffrey he was a very patient Gargoyle. Because even though his frightened Human mate didn't want anything to do with him, he was not about to abandon Zander. He was determined to wait him out, but Geoffrey couldn't stop himself from swooping in and rescuing Zander when he was attacked & hurt by his aggressive male goat. Zander knew the Gargoyle had been out there somewhere lurking around. Which was one of the reasons he'd been on pins and needles. The other reason was he could feel himself becoming attracted to the literal big "Stiff". And that was absolutely the last thing he wanted. To be mesmerized into unwanted feelings for another paranormal creature of the night.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Especially after not being able to get into it the first time I tried to read it. It's a story about learning to trust. About how hard it can be for humans to introduced to the world of paranormals. I never thought how the mate bond could feel like being manipulated against your will. And how easy it would be for a human fated mate to think it's his mate's glamour that's making him feel so attracted to the paranormal.

The Goat Farmer’s Guardian is the tenth installment in Charlie Richard’s A Paranormal Love Series. The story revisits Zander and Geoffrey and picks up after the events of a previous book in the series.

Zander’s introduction into the paranormal world was a bad experience and thus Geoffrey had to work harder to convince his mate that he meant no harm and only wanted Zander’s happiness. Or at least that was the premise of this story. The execution, however, had some holes and left me wanting. This was very short, so there was only so much the author could do, but things just happened to easily. Yes, Zander put up the token fight by randomly getting angry when he felt the paranormals were manipulating him. But that anger always faded almost instantly and after only a few chats with Geoffrey about being mates, he decided all was well and they were meant to be happy together forever. He even stepped in to help save the family of the vampire who used him for blood. I felt confused as to motivation (besides the obvious mate pull) for most of this story.

I am glad that this one was not all about sex like some of the insta-mating stories out there. The author tried to give an actual story with a bit of emotional connection before the men mated. It was nice that this short tale did not overlook the relationship in favor of sex equals love.

Overall, I don’t know. The story was cute and happy, but I felt that much was left out in favor of word count and this story could have been much better with more development and more angst. I still enjoy Ms. Richards’ works, but for me this one needed more and is not a great representation of this series.
