This Train: An Artist's Journal, by Tony Fitzpatrick

This Train: An Artist's Journal is like no other book written by Mr. Fitzpatrick. Unlike previous works, this book will include both high quality drawing collage images accompanied by corresponding essays produced over a sixteen-month period. Part memoir, part urban narrative, part socio-political commentary, each piece is a deeply personal and intellectual contemplation of a broader American story. Fitzpatrick is without a doubt the contemporary voice of the workingman, following strongly in the tradition of both Nelson Algren and Studs Terkel. This Train: An Artist's Journey is the culmination of a nearly two-year meditation on the ideas and experiences that bind us to this land; it is a treatise on the American view from the bottom up.

Review
"Tony Fitzpatrick's drawing collages are the talismanic residue of a modern flaneur's journey through streets where the past and the present, the prosaic and the cosmic, coexist in a perceptual time-space continuum.”- Inside Art New Orleans

"The stories [in This Train] are humorous and touching. There are few great storytellers in this day and age, and Mr. Fitzpatrick has an undeniable gift to engage an audience. This Train is a rare piece of theatre that is not to be missed." -Chicago Critic

"Tony Fitzpatrick tells stories in the manner of his hero and friend, Studs Terkel, and I would gather that Studs is looking down on him with a big s--t grin on his face and having some great laughs.” -SteadyStyle Chicago

"Everything in New Orleans is a good idea.”

-Bob Dylan, Chronicles, Volume One

This is a sad one for me. We in Chicago lost Koko Taylor

this week. She was one of those genuine articles-a sturdy,

bewigged, gold-toothed tough girl who made a name for herself on grit, guts, and talent. A voice that sounds like something preserved in amber or dirty honey, a voice that can be cracked road and ether at the same time-Koko was a wrecking ball of heartbreak. I saw her often in Chicago and always got that chill one gets when bearing witness to the real thing. I get it a lot in New Orleans when I hear John Boutt sing, or Leroy Jones play "Soft Shoe,” or watch Paul Sanchez weave story and song as seamlessly as a mockingbird building a nest. They don't do it for money-they never did. They do it because they haven't any other choice. They are the thing they do. When you hear Koko sing, or Leroy play, or Paul perform, they are music itself-a long, continuing narrative that shifts the shape in voice, or instrument, of whoever is letting it free.

It was good being in New Orleans last week. I spent my

whole visit without anyone, even once, bringing up the storm. What people are buzzing about is what's next. Prospect.2 is a short fifteen or so months away. New galleries are popping up,and there is a new and renewed optimism about this place.

As much fun as Jazz Fest, Mardi Gras, and Voodoo Fest

are, I love New Orleans off-season in its quieter times. With its half-asleep, hazy beats slowed to a stroll, the place becomes more visible and strange, like a De Chirico cityscape of the imagination. Frenchmen Street and Bourbon are still hopping at night, but the rest of the Quarter is quiet like a Sunday morning before church services start and after the drunks have stumbled home. I like that New Orleans, too. If you get up early, or stay up late enough, you can see the oysters delivered to the Acme Oyster House in big burlap sacks, fresh every morning. You can drift by Croissant D'or and smell the baked bread from a block away. You can wander to the corner on Decatur to the Cafe Envie coffeehouse and see the walking wounded play chess, smoke, and try to keep from nodding off in the heat. A stroll down Royal Street is a history lesson with all of the antiques silently telling their own ghost stories in the shop windows.

PDR's Use is dwindling
By Alax Martin
PDR is continuing to go south. The Pages decrease every year as more and more drugs go generic. Generic drugs get lackluster coverage. As I said last year, NEVER pay full price last year. Even Nurses I know don't think this a good resource. Sources like Lippincott and the Internet easily trump this book. I like it simply because the Doctors have it and I got it cheap but don't pay much!

2012 PDR Useless if you don't know manufacturer
By Bill
I purchased the 2012 PDR for my wife for looking up information on drugs for her pharmacology class. There is no index listing by brand and generic names of drugs with the manufacturer listed. She needs to look up the manufacturer name on the internet in order to find the drug in the PDR. Makes no sense at all. She gave up using the PDR as it was too time-consuming.Physicians' Desk Reference, 66th Edition (Gift box) (Physicians' Desk Reference (Bookstore Version))

Classic Judith Viorst humor writing
By Catherine S. Vodrey
Fine poetry this is not, but Judith Viorst hits another home run by applying her piercing sense of humor to the sundry atrocities involved in turning forty: having your children grow up, wondering about your husband, feeling left out, misunderstood, underappreciated, uncomfortable dinner parties, seeing the marriages of your friends break up, and so on.
This all sounds like very much a downer, but Viorst manages the neat trick of turning it into funny stuff, as in "The Truth":
"The truth is
If I had it all to do over
I still wouldn't study Swahili,
Learn to fly a plane,
Or take 92 lovers,
Some of them simultaneously . . .
The truth is
That I'll always want to be
Pure enough to hate white bread,
Deep enough to admire Patagonian folk art,
Thin enough to go swimming in the nude,
Mature enough to outgrow Erich Fromm,
Nice enough to be nice to my Uncle Bernie,
And secure enough to not need getting married."
Viorst raises issues that come up as you get older, and takes her readers with her by acknowledging the down side while seeing the humor it all brings as well. This is a terrific gift for a "newly forty" pal or for any married mom with kids.

Knowing How it Feels
By Ruth A. Hayes
For a decade that begins with being "Over the Hill," there is a negative connotation comes with being forty. It implies that 40 means "old". You may often be asking yourself, "Where did the time go?" Instead of looking ahead, as for the previous years, you may find your self searching back. Lonely and Confused you may wonder, "Does anyone know how it feels?" By reading Viorst's Book, I was motivated to look ahead instead of searching for the past. She made it feel as though there is still a hike to hump of the hill. Entusiastic about being forty instead of being depressed about middle-age, she explains how to cope with the every-day experiences of being forty. To best put it she makes you feel OKAY about middle-age!

Great little book!
By Martha Cooper
Judith Viorst is my favorite author! I loved discovering her books on age. She hits the mark more times than not on the feelings that we have at a given age! I find that I reread her books often when I need a lift or a laugh! Makes a wonderful gift for a good friend.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Noted short story writer Bacigalupi (Pump Six and Other Stories) proves equally adept at novel length in this grim but beautifully written tale of Bangkok struggling for survival in a post-oil era of rising sea levels and out-of-control mutation. Capt. Jaidee Rojjanasukchai of the Thai Environment Ministry fights desperately to protect his beloved nation from foreign influences. Factory manager Anderson Lake covertly searches for new and useful mutations for a hated Western agribusiness. Aging Chinese immigrant Tan Hock Seng lives by his wits while looking for one last score. Emiko, the titular despised but impossibly seductive product of Japanese genetic engineering, works in a brothel until she accidentally triggers a civil war. This complex, literate and intensely felt tale, which recalls both William Gibson and Ian McDonald at their very best, will garner Bacigalupi significant critical attention and is clearly one of the finest science fiction novels of the year. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—In a future Thailand, calories are the greatest commodity. Anderson is a calorie-man whose true objective is to discover new food sources that his company can exploit. His secretary, Hock Seng, is a refugee from China seeking to ensure his future. Jaidee is an officer of the Environmental Ministry known for upholding regulations rather than accepting bribes. His partner, Kanya, is torn between respect for Jaidee and hatred for the agency that destroyed her childhood home. Emiko is a windup, an engineered and despised creation, discarded by her master and now subject to brutality by her patron. The actions of these characters set in motion events that could destroy the country. Bacigalupi has created a compelling, if bleak, society in which corruption, betrayal, and despair are commonplace, and more positive behavior and emotions such as hope and love are regarded with great suspicion. The complex plot and equally complex characters require a great deal of commitment from readers. Even the most sympathetic people have darker sides, and it is difficult to determine which character or faction should triumph. This highly nuanced, violent, and grim novel is not for every teen. However, mature readers with an interest in political or environmental science fiction or those for whom dystopias are particularly appealing will be intrigued. If they are able to immerse themselves completely into the calorie-mad world of a future Bangkok, they will not be disappointed.—Karen E. Brooks-Reese, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA

From Bookmarks Magazine
Reviewers seemed to struggle with The Windup Girl, but in the same way one struggles with a great work of art. All were bewildered by the world Bacigalupi has created and by his ability to create characters that effectively dramatize its many differences from (as well as crucial similarities to) our own. Yet all felt the need to dwell upon some aspect of the book that did not quite sit right with them--whether it was the intense (though not gratuitous) violence or the sleights of hand Bacigalupi uses to craft the plot. Perhaps such reactions were not surprising, though, for a book that many hailed as a masterpiece of the unsettling.

No spoilers or critiques, just my thoughts.
By Ronnie Darling
What a fabulous book! It took a while to read this because I had to share it with my wife, and she kept it quite a while, but this week I finally was able to get it back and finish it. I really don't want to give out any spoilers, so I'm going to say this story was beautiful, and full of bewitching details that my wife missed. She's more of a big-picture reader, skimming through pages, however, I dig into the story and cherish small details that make me feel like I have been there. I adored how Jaidee was kept in the story throughout the book, and I cried for Anderson like a heartsick girl. It was hard to tell who were the good guys and who were the bad guys since the author exposed ulterior motives and pasts and with so many stories within the story, you were sure to cheer on the same person you disliked in the previous chapter. The theology involved was a mixture of Buddhism, superstitions, and some Christianity, but it felt right, it wasn't forced. I had to look up some of the foods because I'm not a big fan of Asian foods, but don't feel like you have to do the same to get the story, it's definitely readable just as it is. My only complaint is that I wish I could read it again with fresh eyes.

I read that this was a YA book, but frankly, the sex was explicit if not even violent, so no, don't buy this for your fifteen year old. In a lot of ways, this book was frightening, and I believe that if you were any person who objects to man meddling with nature in the manner of manufactured viruses, or weapons, or even food crops, this story will definitely have you shuddering.

A near term distropic tale of biological disaster
By C. F. Crowe
Baclgalupi's story is set in Bangkok Thailand, one of the last surviving centers of human population. All petroleum has been used by a thoughtless civilization and the primary energy source is animal motion transferred into "kink springs". Plant and animal DNA has been manipulated to create new foods as well as animals as well as gene engineered people. Devastating diseases and plagues have invaded the planet killing most other food sources.

The "new people" have been designed to serve the remnants of mankind as sex slaves, specialized labor and warriors. One new person female sex slave (a windup girl) discovers that her creators have accidentally given her some unexpected capabilities that give her an advantage over old style humans.

I came to read Paolo's books with "The Water Knife" and enjoyed it so much I searched for his earlier works such as this.

Engrossing!
By Kindle Customer
A tour de force. You are plunged into a near-future dystopian Bangkok that is surrounded by the risen seas and wracked with GMO's gone wrong. No long explanations of how things got the way they are; all is revealed slowly, elegantly, organically. Not fun but not a horror show. There's an authenticity to the exotic setting and people that engenders reflection on humanity and current events. That's what's best about science fiction. Great story, too.

I read that one and really liked the writers approach to the subject
By K F MACKAY
I heard the author on NPR, talking about his other book. I read that one and really liked the writers approach to the subject, so I bought this one too. It's the fascinating story of lobsters and lobstering, and the social, scientific and regulatory commnunities and their interplay. It's a great general interest book, especially if you're from New England or fancy a lobster dinner now and then.

Review
Carlos Fuentes Popol Vuh is one of the great books about the creation of the world. It is the Mayan Bible.

Los Angeles Times The volume is required reading for everyone seriously interested in Native American literature or in Meso-American cultural history. Its publication is a major event.

William Arrowsmith, Robert W. Woodruff Professor of Classics and Comparative Literature, Emory University Dennis Tedlock's splendid version...[is] the work of a brilliant anthropologist who is also a true "poet of performance," himself trained by a native Quich master....Superb notes and glossary...An event of quite exceptional importance.

Vine Deloria, Jr. author of Custer Died for Your Sins Tedlock's translation is sensitive, precise, and illuminating. It will greatly help the Popol Vuh achieve its rightful place as a masterpiece of religious writing, familiar to all those who seek a message that transcends ordinary concerns.

Ian Myles Slater on: Even More Definitive?
By Ian M. Slater
The "Popol Vuh," written in a Mayan language but a European script, is the most substantial surviving account of the Maya view of their own history, including that of their gods and divine ancestors, and has presented a host of problems for translators. The Tedlock translation of 1985 added new information to the work of many distinguished predecessors, and made substantial parts of the narrative clear (or at least much clearer).

The fact that a fairly extensively revised edition of this book was not only possible, but necessary, in 1996, a decade after its first publication, might have discouraged the publisher from continuing to call the new version "Definitive" on the cover. The title page more precisely calls it a Revised Edition of "Popol Vuh: The Mayan Book of the Dawn of Life ... with commentary based on the ancient knowledge of the modern Quiche Maya." However, "Definitive" seems to be the marketing buzzword. But how would a third edition be described? (Dennis Tedlock has recently -- 2003 -- returned to the writings of the post-Conquest Maya aristocrats who actually produced the existing "Popol Vuh," in "Rabinal Achi: A Mayan Drama of War and Sacrifice," so it is clear that his work in the area continues.)

In fact, the work of Dennis and Barbara Tedlock with living Quiche Maya ritualists (priests / diviners / shamans), which, in the first edition, added so much to understanding this early post-Conquest text, was part of a larger expansion of Maya studies, including a more complete decipherment of ancient inscriptions, and greatly improved studies of Maya art. It is now possible to recognize events, and even characters, of the "Popol Vuh" in art centuries older, and their prototypes a millennium earlier. Meso-American cultures have been re-analyzed, and lost details recovered, as part of a major, and very rapid, shift in understanding.

As an example: a large part of the story of "Popol Vuh" involves games played in ball-courts, in this world and the world of the dead; a major collection of papers on this theme, in Mayan and other cultures, "The Mesoamerican Ballgame," was based on a conference held the same year the first edition of Tedlock's translation appeared (Scarborough and Wilcox, 1991).

Another change was the adoption of a new official system for writing Mayan languages in the Roman alphabet, one devised, for the first time, by native speakers of the various languages. This adds considerably to etymological and grammatical precision, but enormously complicates recognizing words and names in older systems. (Anyone familiar with the juggling of Wade-Giles and Pinyin transliterations of Chinese will be only too familiar with the kind of adjustment process for ordinary readers.)

Tedlock has attempted, with considerable success, to incorporate this new information, and the new transcription system, into the old structure of the book. In the process, besides adding fascinating illustrations and fine-tuning the translation, he has restructured the introduction and notes. Some interesting personal observations are gone, or greatly reduced. References to older literature, often with Tedlock's reconsiderations, have generally been replaced by citations of more recent studies. Once debatable points have been given firm answers, and new questions have been raised. Some material which, at a first glance, I assumed to be missing, turned out, on close examination (with copies of both editions open in front of me, and the help of a lot of post-it flags), to have been broken up or consolidated in different contexts. In a few places, however, the strain shows, as a once-clear line of argument is disrupted. The sheer complication of the material explicated, in which social, cosmic / astronomical, and agricultural references are constantly intertwined, probably made this inevitable.

Archeological and epigraphic material has somewhat eclipsed in prominence the modern Maya contribution to this edition, although for fuller information it was always necessary to turn to Barbara Tedlock's "Time and the Highland Maya."

Among more recent publications of considerable value for understanding the mythological and astronomical material, Susan Milbrath's "Star Gods of the Maya: Astronomy in Art, Folklore, and Calendars" (1999) is exhausting, but I found it particularly illuminating. A series of books of which the late Linda Schele was co-author or co-editor (The Blood of Kings," 1986; "The Forest of Kings," 1990; "Maya Cosmos: Three Thousand Years on the Shaman's Path," 1993; and "The Code of Kings," 1999) are more popular in style, and very rewarding; unfortunately, like everything else in Mayan studies, they have dated very quickly, and the reader should always keep the date of publication in mind. Technical studies -- linguistic, epigraphic, archeological, art-historical -- are now abundant, but also harder for me to judge.

[Addendum, June 2014: At about the time I was writing this review in 2004, a two-volume translation-with commentary-and-texts was being published by O Books in the UK and US; Allen J. Christenson's "Popol Vuh: The Sacred Book of the Maya" (2003), and "Popol Vuh: Literal Poetic Version" (2004). This treatment was reprinted by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2007-2008, and is still in print. As the reader of these Amazon reviews will notice, some feel called upon to rank the two translations. I don't (although I have reviews of Christenson's two volumes in progress as I add this note).]

[Addendum February 2015: For some reason, in 2014 I left out any mention of the blog "Maya Decipherment," which contains fascinating material from the ongoing exploration of Maya (and other Meso-American) civilization; some of it is fairly technical, but not impenetrably so.]

Great edition of an essential world text - lots of helps
By Craig Matteson
The Maya did not divide their everyday lives and religion. In fact, they didn't have a religion in our sense at all. Their everyday lives were bound up in visions, stories of the heavens, earth, past, and future that were not separate from the reality of their everyday experience. This book, the "Popol Vuh" means Council Book. That is, it is a book for the Lords to consult. One of its other titles is "The Light That Came From Beside the Sea". It is a document of the Quiche Maya who lived (and still live) in a portion of what is present day Guatemala.

The "Popol Vuh" tells the essential myth of the ball game and the hero twins. Its story is far too involved and strange to try and explain it in this review. The story explains things about the Sun, Moon, and Venus in their play across the heavens. It prepares the living for what awaits them in Xibalba (the awful place below the earth). And there is constant gratitude for the knowledge of the creation of men from maize and the light of understanding this book brings them. The various sacred places of mountains, caves, and of ritual sacrifice are all here and powerfully expressed.

Dennis Tedlock translated the text into clear and very readable English. However, that is not sufficient for the uninitiated to understand. So, Tedlock provides us with an introductory essay to help us understand the context of these stories. At the back he also provides notes on the text arranged by page number, a glossary of terms (which we desperately need to read the book), a wonderful bibliography for further reading, and an index.

Now, a couple of things to keep in mind when you read this book (and you should). This text has one written source, and it is written in the Mayan language with a Western alphabet. Also, this copy is post Conquest so there is no real way to know how the story was changed or influenced by the Christian stories that were also (forcibly) taught to the Maya, if at all. If you end up believing that this story is an intact retelling of the true Myth without Christian influences, there are some pretty strange and wonderful parallels. If you are uncomfortable with some of the parallels, then you will want to explain them away by claiming corruption by the Christian conquerors. Take your pick. No one really knows.

Terrific edition of an important text that you can really enjoy reading and adding to your understanding of the world and the total range of the human experience.

Much more than a translation
By A Customer
Tedlock's translation is far more than a translation. Because the meaning of the Popol Vuh, he tells us, is situationally dependent (i.e., is likely to change depending on the context in which the reader approaches the text), Tedlock had to receive formal training as Mayan "daykeeper" (shamanistic reader of the Popol Vuh) before he approached the text. The results are amazing -- a depth of commentary and a tapestry of images that will require a dozen readings before I can begin to comprehend it, but intriguing enough that I bought a copy for my wife for Christmas as well. No folklorist should be without this work.

Practical Applications in Business Aviation Management, by James R. Cannon, Franklin D. Richey

Business aviation is one of America’s most important yet least understood industries. Most organizations (about 85%) operating business aircraft are small and medium-size enterprises. They include a wide range of organizations: state governments, universities, charitable organizations, and all types of businesses. While the organizations that rely on business aviation are varied, they all have one thing in common: the need for fast, flexible, safe, and secure access to destinations worldwide.

Many small U.S. businesses rely on business aviation. They are located in markets where the airlines have reduced or eliminated service, making business aviation an important connection to the rest of the world. Business aviation fosters efficiency and productivity, and is essential in an intensely competitive global marketplace.

This textbook, Practical Applications in Business Aviation Management, systematically examines business aviation and provides you with a complete understanding of one of America’s most dynamic industries. In this comprehensive guide to business aviation management, authors James R. Cannon and Franklin D. Richey provide in-depth and useful information on all aspects of managing a corporate aviation program. The book begins with a brief look at the history of business aviation and its important role in the aviation industry. It then moves on to focus on the practical issues facing all corporate aviation programs, such as:

  • Regulatory compliance
  • Administrative issues
  • Aircraft and facility maintenance
  • Finances and budgeting
  • Aircraft selection and acquisition
  • Standard operating procedures
  • International operations
  • Human resource management
  • Training
  • Communication and teambuilding
  • Safety and security
  • And much more

The book also includes a foreword by Ed Bolen, the President and CEO of the National Business Aviation Association. It is an essential tool for students and professionals who need comprehensive, accurate, and practical information on managing a corporate aviation program.

Good information, badly presented
By 1159A Driver
The information in this book is worthwhile, but the poor editing and proofreading make it difficult to read. The mistakes, both typographical errors and sometimes tortured prose, were so frequent as to prove distracting to someone reading at any level of detail.

A Great Business Aviation Operations and Management Tutorial
By JJ
Any reader who has been in business aviation even for a short period of time will easily resonate with this excellent work. It provides practical guidance and direction for both an experienced person and the beginner. The authors have clearly been in aviation operations and management for some time and been involved in a variety of operational scenarios. Their perspective and advice will be of value to all, be they pilot, mechanic, scheduler, manager or corporate executive.

I particularly liked the standard operating procedures, human resources and safety management systems chapters. They were all very good, inclusive summaries and guides for those essential topics.

If you're looking for background, guidance, counsel or advancement in the field of business aviation this is an excellent guide and learning tool.

Europe on Trial: The Story of Collaboration, Resistance, and Retribution during World War II, by Istvan Deak

In Europe on Trial, acclaimed historian Istvn Dek explores the history of collaboration, retribution, and resistance during World War II. These three themes are examined through the experiences of people and countries under German occupation, as well as Soviet, Italian, and other military rule. Those under foreign rule faced innumerable moral and ethical dilemmas, including the question of whether to cooperate with their occupiers, try to survive the war without any political involvement, or risk their lives by becoming resisters. Many chose all three, depending on wartime conditions. Following the brutal war, the author discusses the purges of real or alleged war criminals and collaborators, through various acts of violence, deportations, and judicial proceedings at the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal as well as in thousands of local courts. Europe on Trial helps us to understand the many moral consequences both during and immediately following World War II.

Review
“Istvn Dek takes the reader on a sweeping survey of some of the bleakest aspects of a bleak period in European history. He dispenses with comforting national myths and unexamined assumptions of national virtue. World War II was, as he writes, ‘one of the greatest tragedies that humans ever brought upon themselves’… a verdict that is amply illustrated by the many evocative, insightful, and distressing examples of human behavior that fill his book.”
—The New York Review of Books

“Deak’s latest book is the product of a long and distinguished career that has produced some of the English-speaking world’s most important scholarship concerning the history of eastern and central Europe during the 20th century.” —CHOICE

"In Europe on Trial, Istvn Dek offers a penetrating and often distressing analysis of the complex moral and ethical dilemmas facing Europeans during World War II. In the process, he writes a much needed counter narrative to the better known, uplifting stories of courage and honorable behavior. His far more multifaceted tale exposes the indifference and overall inhumanity of Europeans during the war.” —Michigan War Studies Review

“The eminent Hungarian-American historian Istvn Dek has delivered one of his finest works with this book that problematizes what once seemed a deceptively simple history of the Second World War. In a lucid manner and an admirably brief fashion, Dek’s work offers a comprehensive account of the ‘collaboration, accommodation, resistance, and retribution’ of all European countries . . . Altogether, this book may very well become a classic as the standard textbook regarding issues of resistance versus collaboration in Europe of the Nazi-era. . . . It is to be hoped, however, that this book reaches a far broader audience than that of college or university researchers and students, as it is a magnificent treatment of ‘civilian life’ in the Second World War.” —Hungarian Cultural Studies Journal

“Dek . . . has his readers ponder all the right questions. With no easy answers, this survey is rich with the moral conundrums that are the stuff of great classroom teaching. Indeed, the author’s probing questions put our own moral certitudes on trial.” —Slavic Review

“A rich and complex analysis of the most controversial and neglected aspects of the war. Unbiased, it destroys various national myths and presents a sad story about political and human weaknesses. . . . The greatest strength of Europe on Trial is its virtuoso elaboration of the striking paradoxes of the behavior of nation-states’ governments and populations.” —Holocaust and Genocide Studies

"This particular study is concise and does not shun unambiguous opinions. It does not avoid daring comparisons, either, talking to the reader outright, using an uncomplicated and clear language . . . Europe on Trial . . . offers a fresh look on the topics it deals with, and a broad perspective in which they are set, enabling to grasp (cor)relations and associations between phenomena that usually tend to be perceived as separate.” —Acta Poloniae Historica

“Dek [is] one of great pioneers of the study of Eastern and Central Europe . . . In this book, published in Dek’s 89th year, he brings together a persuasive account of all of the dilemmas of occupation, as experienced by exceptional people such as Stollr and by the less courageous majority. It unites experiences that are usually separated, between east and west, between the occupied states and the actively collaborating ones, between left and right. His major case is all too relevant today: Europeans were too willing to make an accommodation with Nazi power when Western democracy seemed weak. The governing myth of Europeans is that they have learned something from the Second World War; this book indicates how much remains to be learned, on that side of the Atlantic and on this one.” —Timothy Snyder, author of Black Earth

"Sparing few words, Istvn Dek brilliantly captures the complex and contradictory world that confronted Europeans under Nazi rule. From Belgium to Bulgaria, from the first German conquests to postwar trials, the book presents a refreshingly original and deeply insightful narrative that upends traditional stories of heroism, perseverance, or betrayal. In riveting and accessible prose, Dek gives us a story that will become the standard in university courses on the war and modern European history."
—Benjamin Frommer, Northwestern University

"No historian is better suited than Istvn Dek to survey collaboration, resistance, and retribution in relation to the Second World War. Europe on Trial excavates the complexities, ambiguities, and ironies of these occupation experiences. Dek’s insightful analysis and vibrant storytelling also follows an unerring moral compass. Here is a master scholar’s eloquent meditation on Hitler’s Europe."
—James Mace Ward, University of Rhode Island

"Professor Dek has provided an essential service to the historical profession by writing a book which provides a synthetic overview of collaboration and resistance in Nazi-Dominated Europe. His book fills an enormous gap in the textbook literature on the Third Reich by viewing the period through the lens of the various national histories of occupation and domination. He also illuminates the extent to which the Holocaust could not have been accomplished without the willing collaboration of many Europeans."
—Benjamin Lapp, Montclair State University

"A good deal of the literature, especially on collaboration and retribution, is focused on western Europe. Deak, an accomplished scholar of modern central and east European history, brings much-needed balance to this discussion."
—Robert Blobaum, West Virgina University

"This book should attract huge interest, not only among those of us who teach upper-level modern European history courses, but from the greater public as well."
—Nancy Wingfield, Northern Illinois University

"Traditionally, historians have made a sharp break in 1945, either covering the war or postwar but not both. Recently, more and more scholars are realizing that the 1939-1949 decade hangs together in many ways. It is a real strength of this book that it embraces the whole decade."
—James Felak, University of Washington

"Istvn Dek's essays on Europe's crisis decades have long been indispensable reading for historians of modern Europe. His new book crowns a distinguished career, and offers a truly fresh perspective on one of the most fascinating and fateful periods in twentieth-century European history."
—Bruce Thompson, University of California, Santa Cruz

"This is an excellent contribution on an important subject by an experienced scholar. The truly European range of the exposition is impressive. The interpretations are interesting and the attempt at evaluative balance exemplary."
—Konrad H. Jarausch, University of North Carolina

“Coming from an experiences scholar, this insightful analysis provides a fresh perspective not only on the war; Europe on Trial helps readers understand the many moral consequences both during and immediately following World War II.” —SirReadaLot

“An engrossing probe into the decisions made by political figures and individual citizens during [World War II].” —Midwest Book Review

A work that is at once erudite and personal
By George Deak
Disclosure: I am not related to Istvan Deak, though I share his surname (it being quite a common Hungarian and, in both of our cases, Jewish-Hungarian name). I was also a student of his long ago (in the 1970s) at Columbia University. Although I did not follow Professor Deak into the profession of history, I have followed his publications and scintillating book reviews in the New York Review of Books, The New Republic and other journals.

Istvan Deak is a master historian. He brings a lifetime of study and teaching experience to explore some problems of World War II history that he has been considering since his own traumatic coming of age in wartime Budapest. Thus, the book is at once erudite and personal. The moral judgments, one feels, are hinged on the question of what would he have done in the position of the actors under study, or, in hindsight, what could and should have been done. One is reminded of the many cases in which simple human compassion was missing, but also of odd cases in which it was displayed where least expected, as in Denmark, where all Danish Jews were allowed to escape to Sweden with the connivance of German occupiers.

The book presents three complexly interrelated modes of behavior that the war and its aftermath elicited from Europeans: collaboration and resistance during the war, and retribution as it ended. As Deak points out, these were not exhaustive or exclusive. Most people in fact, just tried to survive and accommodate themselves to the situation. Then there were the most severely targeted victims, such as the Jews and Poles, who in most cases were unable to choose collaboration or even accommodation, and chose resistance (in my opinion) perhaps too rarely. But the fate and actions of these victims is covered in many other works. The originality of this work is its exploration of the temporal trajectories and interactions, motivations, ironies, inhumanities and often moral dilemmas of the three other modes that appear in its title.

The coverage is broad but balanced. All of Nazi-occupied and Nazi-allied Europe is surveyed and one gets a sense of the different possibilities, dilemmas, and relative intensities of conflict faced in each country. Even the collaboration of neutral Spain in the war against the Soviet Union is mentioned, making this reader want to learn more.

In considering collaboration, the ambiguities are many. Was a Dane or a Czech who worked in an industry that served the German war effort a collaborator? As Deak points out, people often had more choices than they allowed themselves to make. Or could Marshal Petain, head of government of Vichy France, legitimately claim, as he did at his trial, that he shielded France from a harsher German occupation? Probably not! For, as we learn, Petain's France took anti-Jewish measures in anticipation of German requests. Collaborators generally had self-seeking goals of their own.

As for the resistance, were attacks on German targets always worth their costs? After Mussolini's dismissal but while there were still Germans in Rome, the Italian resisters exploded a device in a narrow street through which a column of German soldiers passed every day. Thirty three German soldiers were killed but the reprisals took the lives of 335 innocent Italians. Despite such costs, and considering our own experience in Iraq, Deak makes a good case for rejecting the judgment of military historians that the resistance was of little significance in hastening the defeat of Germany.

The part on retributions is also quite a sad tale, in that it points out how often the guilty got off, partly in deference to the perceived needs of the Cold War, and how often the innocent were punished, mostly in the form of massive ethnic cleansing that took place in much of Eastern Europe.

Deak's keen eye for the bizarre and the ironic is also evident throughout this work. For example, in May, 1945, a German unit that was captured by the British after the general surrender borrowed British rifles so that they could carry out death sentences on German soldiers who had been earlier condemned for desertion.

Sad as most of the stories are, the wealth of anecdotes and their master retelling will fascinate most history buffs. The Epilogue even leaves one hopeful.

Sobering
By Peter Gacs
Books about recent history will always provoke controversy. This one
especially, digging into a lot of wounds as it is concerned mainly
with the *moral* aspects of World War II in Europe. While the
synthesis of a lot of research, followed over decades, it is written
in a highly readable style, for the general reader as well as for
history students. Some of the anecdotes accenting it (always in order
to make a point) come from the author's own wartime experience.

The greatest virtue of the work is the right proportions of the big
picture, even while emphasizing the complexities. The commitment to
accuracy in not just the details is everywhere palpable: the most
important points are brought to our attention repeatedly.

The choices offered by the war were vastly different for different
nations in Europe. In the west, genuine incentives were offered for
cooperation, which were by and large made use of. Resistance was
minor (with some heroic exceptions), and became stronger only as
Germany was seen to be losing. East-central and southern Europe is
very complex: for a number of nations and groups here the war was a
way to achieve their own goals and to settle scores. Eastern
Europeans (Poland, Belorussia, Ukraine, Russia) were marked for
slavery or extermination: most of the resisters had no other option.
Jews were offered no choice, and were betrayed by their neighbors
almost everywhere -- again, with some important exceptions.

After the war, the complex dynamics of nationalistic drives,
score-settling and necessary compromises made it generally impossible
to do genuine justice to the victims and to punish the perpetrators --
though retribution was more comprehensive in the East. How the
enormous upheavals caused by this war did not become the seeds of a
next one, is another arresting topic (see Judt's Postwar).

It is hard to put down this book without being deeply upset and
disheartened about the moral possibilities and propensities of
mankind. (Case in point: German soldiers, even in the SS, were never
punished for refusing to take part in atrocities -- but astonishingly
few of them did refuse.) To me, Dek's own example offers the only
kind of consolation: demonstrating that by undeterred and passionate
scholarship the truth can be found -- moreover, by judicious
organization and brilliant exposition can be made broadly accessible.

A gyermeknek, hogy gy igaz.
[And console him, if this can be any consolation
to the child, that it is true this way.]

Excellent treatment of the European resistance movements in WWII
By Susan Springer
As a young boy in Hungary during the Second World War I experienced frightening bombing raids and the almost unparalleled horrors of the siege of Budapest. I saw German and Soviet forces clashing in the streets and inside our apartment building; I heard the deadly firefight between members of a Hungarian resistance group and the authorities, an event which took place a mere 100 yards from our home and is highlighted by Deak. When the hostilities ceased, I joined the crowd in front of the courthouse and the jail where the major Hungarian war criminals were tried and executed, waiting for any tidbit of news. However, as Deak describes, not all war criminals were tried by the authorities, some dealt with what then was called the "revolutionary way". I saw the victim of such summary justice hanging from a lamppost in the center of Budapest, a gruesome sight that is also noted by Deak.

Like most of my contemporaries, I was greatly affected by these experiences and was eager to learn more of the "big picture" behind the isolated pictures I saw only through my youthful eyes. Being behind the Iron Curtain, I had no access to Western publications until I reached the West in 1956. To my surprise, books about resistance dealt mostly with particular activities, generally emphasizing successes. Deak's book fills the void, providing excellent descriptions of specific operations of different resistance groups opposing the Germans and their allies and often each other. Undoubtedly, some of these will be familiar to readers. What makes Deak's book unique is his thoughtful analysis of the members, the goals and politics of the different groups, and their successes measured against the destruction and miseries they wrought in the short term and their long lasting effects shaping Europe after the war. Deak also examines the fates of collaborators and their uneven, and in some cases grossly unfair, treatment by the victors.

I enjoyed Deak's superbly written book as it answered my questions and curiosity on the subject. I can most highly recommend it to all who are interested in the Second World War and wish to learn about the European resistance movements.
