Cosmos was the first science TV blockbuster, and Carl Sagan was its (human) star. By the time of Sagan's death in 1996, the series had been seen by half a billion people; Sagan was perhaps the best-known scientist on the planet. Explaining how the series came about, Sagan recalled:

I was positive from my own experience that an enormous global interest exists in the exploration of the planets and in many kindred scientific topics--the origin of life, the Earth, and the Cosmos, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, our connection with the universe. And I was certain that this interest could be excited through that most powerful communications medium, television.

This book is brilliant ! ! !

Carl Sagan's Cosmos, tells the strory of 15 billion years of cosmic history like no one else can.
The book shows how broad and deep Carl's interests extend and draws the reader into a world of fascination. Although the book is primarily about how science has developed in our society the book touches on subjects such as history, philosophy, religion, cultures and so fourth. The book is written in simple terms and is understandable to those without a background in science.
Carl has an amazing ability to write with such enthusiasim and sincerity. Although the book was written at the height of the cold war it reflects an overall optimisim and hope for our species and planet. Carl Sagan is a remarkable human being and humanitarian as is reflected in all of his books. Cosmos is in some way his manifesto and I believe his best book. Carl's death was a loss not just to science but also to our species.
Carl Sagan is my favourite author and Cosmos my favourite book.
I recommend Cosmos to all of those who can read! *****!!!

As one of the great astronomer-writers of the Twentieth Century, Carl Sagan was extraordinarily communicative with the non-scientific public, able and willing to take the time and trouble to break down the mysteries of the universe into comprehensible fragments. The purpose of this book, which can be considered a companion to the acclaimed television series, is to explain what we know about the universe from a cosmological perspective and why we need to know more about it.
Physicists often talk of the unity of the branches of physics: the interrelation and application of mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, and optics to the motion of everything from galaxies to subatomic particles. Similarly, Sagan's major theme is the unity of cosmology with the natural and physical sciences that define what we know about the Earth. Does the stifling, carbon dioxide-choked atmosphere of Venus imply anything about the greenhouse effect on Earth? Was a nearby cosmic explosion called a supernova indirectly responsible for the disappearance of the dinosaurs? What would be the biological consequences for the survivors of a global nuclear war? The answers to these questions are vital to the continuation of life as we know it.
Sagan also identifies cosmology with its own history. He lavishes reverent detail on the ancient Greek and Alexandrian study of the stars and planetary motions, the pioneering work by the Renaissance scientists Brahe, Kepler, Copernicus, Huygens, and others, and the men who revolutionized science with the formulation of laws of motion, Newton and Einstein.
The scope of "Cosmos" is tremendous, from the farthest expanses of the universe containing a hundred billion galaxies in addition to our own Milky Way, at the end of a spiraling arm of which our solar system is located; down to the lone electron circling the nucleus of a hydrogen atom, the most plentiful single entity in the cosmos and the source of everything we know, love, and are. In between there is discussion of the unmanned spacecraft expeditions to investigate "our" planets: Mars with its boulder-strewn, desert-like terrain; the gaseous giant Jupiter; Io, a Jovian moon of incredible redness, spotted with volcanic orifices and resembling an unappealing sauce-covered meatball; Saturn with its ice rings. Would these worlds contain life? Using what we know about the evolution of life on Earth, Sagan hypothesizes how different types of lifeforms might develop on worlds with different environments.
Even a casual interest in cosmology requires a fascination with astronomical distances and unthinkably long spans of time in which a human lifetime is but a blink of an eye. However, Sagan seems to write also for those who would rather relate cosmic arcana to familiar terms, and in this sense he is a grand entertainer: A thought experiment that provides a simple but fanciful illustration of the concept of black holes uses the tea party scene in "Alice in Wonderland" as a setting. "Cosmos" neither complicates unnecessarily nor insults your intelligence; very few "popular" science books will capture your imagination so well.

Surely one of the greatest of all books.

I first saw the series COSMOS on TV in about 1980 when I was about 12, and have been searching for similar material ever since. Carl Sagan is able to capture the mystery and the beauty of astronomy, science, art and religion in a way that most poeple can follow, and in a way that is interesting and invigorating. He is a very clear thinker and presenter. And this book, based on that very popular TV series of the same name, I found in an old book store, which I immediately grabbed. Here was something of my childhood, and something very special. The book did not disappoint. It is filled with stunning images, photographs, illustrations, diagrams and so on. And the text is fun, enlightening, clear, visionary, and precise. Not surprising, since it is written by an atronomer at heart. It is also advisable to search around and buy the illustrated edition-the illustrations add much to the text.

Carl places the earth on the shores of the cosmic ocean-the title of the first chapter. He traces religious, artistic and scientific investigations into the 'cosmos' throughout the millenia, and the amount of useful historical information he brings up is quite extraordinary. He draws together the thoughts of ancient cultures like the Greeks, Babylonians, Stone Age man, Renaissance thinkers, poets, artists, and famous scientists, and ties these in with many modern discoveries concerning the nature of the universe. One can see his strong leanings on the likelihood of extraterrestial life and the SETI project between the lines, as well as his views on religion and its place in the human psyche. One particularly interesting peice describes the downfall of the old greek science and the destruction of the library at Alexandria, and how these tie in with his views on history, science and religion in general.

Carl Sagan is a very clear and thoughtful writer. It is obvious that his knowledge of human nature and science is vast and humane. He worries much about the mususe of science, and the future of man. This book is a must for lovers of general science, human nature and destiny. As such it is a timeless classic. I'll close with the books closing words:

"For we are the local embodiment of a Cosmos grown to self awareness. We have begun to contemplate our origins:starstuff pondering the stars; organised assemblages of ten billion billion billion atoms considering the evolution of atoms; tracing their long journey by which, here at least, consciousness arose. Our loyalties are to the species and the planet. We speak for earth. Our obligation to survive is owed not just to ourselves but also to that Cosmos, ancient and vast, from which we sprung."

An Indispensable Reference in my Clinic

I love this book and have gotten a lot of use out of it. I've enjoyed adapting my own analogues based on what oils I have available, and have used the techniques detailed here on both myself and my patients. I've also experimented with combining the use of essential oils with acupressure for typically painful points on the feet and hands, and my patients love it! I think it should be said, however, that this book is really more of a collection of lists than a readable handbook. Personally, I would like to hear more commentary on the authors' application of these formulas in the clinic - what worked, what didn't, whether some oils work better than others in certain situations, etc. There's a lot of information here but it's about as dry as it gets.

A great way to use essential oils with the sophisitcation of herbal formulas

I use essential oil blends on acupuncture points and they work well to stimulate the body. But Chinese Medicine has an encyclopedia of herbal formulas that are based on constitution, disease pattern and herbal energetics. Essential oils will never be as nourishing as herbs which can tonify deficiencies and make up for minerals missing in the diet. But they can function quite well at dispersing blockages (stagnation) and fighting infections of the various categories. They also can dispel pain and move blood. This book allows a far more sophisticated use of essential oils for one who understands Chinese Medicine.

Humorous and disturbing but worth the read

A am absolutely fascinated with addiction memoirs. I have had personal experiences with the odd world of manufacturing methamphetamine and I will tell you, these stories are the real deal. I admire Wayne Huffman for making a prison term into a successful career. The majority of Americans have no idea how rare and difficult that is.
Although the tales told in meth uncensored are crude and shocking, they chronicle the depths of psychosis caused by long term use. I hope books like this will help reform our legal system so that addicts will be treated with proper medical care rather than left to rot.

This book was a good compliment to the authors first book, Meth A Memoir, as it expounds on some of the character stories from the first book and has a few more stories added. When I finished reading the first book I read this one immediately and I was disappointed to see that I was almost finished with the book because I was so engrossed in the stories and being able to take a tiny peek into this unique world and lifestyle. This book can also stand alone and give the reader a clear picture, however it is my opinion that it's better served as a follow up to the first book.

regression and survival analysis with apps strickly for actuaries and financial analyst

This text covers regression techniques which the author views as the most commonly used statistical technique especially in the world of insurance and finance. Since the book is in a series for actuarial science I expected the presentation to be elementary to intermediate and to only cover regression. But some of the latter topics were quite advanced. In my mind survival analysis which is extremely important to actuaries and time series analysis which in very important to finance would not be covered as they do not fall into the category of regression. But thankfully they are included.

Some time series models such as polynomial functions of time can be viewed as linear regression models where time is the predictor variable for the response. But the main models like exponetial smoothing, Box-Jenkins and ARCH/GARCH which are the main ones applied in financial forecasting are really not regression in my view. But these too are covered in the book.

The book starts out in Chapter 1 with a very elementary review of statistics and simple forms of regression. Then Chapter 2-6 form part I which is titled Regression. Chapter 2 presents the basics of simple linear regression. Chapters 3 and 4 cover multiple regression. This is not a cookbook of techniques. The author provides background, historical developments and important concepts and mixes in applications to actuarial science and finance throughout. At the end of most chapters are a large number of exercises with solutions for selected problems in the back. In chapter 3 the author explains least squares presents the modeling assumptions and introduces the Gauss-Markovas well as all the standard concepts of hypothesis testing that a regression parameter is significant, R-square and theorem (hence also the concept of minimum variance among unbiased estimators). In Chapter 4 he provides the unified theme of the general linear hypothesis as he covers categorical predictor variables, the analysis of variance and covariance (all general linear models) In Chapter 5, leverage points, multicollinearity, and regression diagnostics are presented in the context of variable selection. Chapter 6 is all about interpretation and limitations.

Later in Parts III and IV the author introduces nonlinear regression models, logistic regression, probit and tobit models, Poisson and negative binomial regression, generalized linear models,and specialized techniques such as bootstrapping, mixed linear models, proportional hazards regression, generalized additive models and the Bayesian approach to regression. The coverage gets more advanced as you move through the chapters

Part II on time series includes seasonal models, discussion of stationary and longitudinal and panel data models.

In Part III survival analysis is included in Chapter 14. This includes the Kaplan-Meier estimates, proportional hazards regression, accelerated failure time models and even the analysis of recurrent events.

Part IV specifically focuses on actuarial applications and it is here that heavytailed distributions are dealt with using quantile regression and extreme value probability models.

With such an extensive list of topics the book is a large volume of over 560 pages. But even so it is not possible to do justice to this extensive list. The author provides an outstanding list of references at the end of the chapters that provides additional reading on the various topics.

In addition the author prvides programs in SAS and R as well as output form these packages. More detailed examples and projects can be found on the books website.

I believe this one is a good way to move from theory with a little review of it into practice, since most of owr training is in univariate and most of the time we are not shown how its done outside, I also recommend the book

There are magnificent books about the French Revolution, Michelet's (not Burke, not Carlysle could match its emotional committment to the heart rather than the idea), Lammartine (readers have sung the Marselleise leafing through the history of te Gironde), then comes Lefevbre, a modern..narrates at Michelet's tempo the measures of Lammartine's events. No doubt the modern's attraction is to the more objective clause, and yet, at some point an image of Marianne strats to appear in the pages. Yes, a son of the Revolution, on the way to the annaliste school. This is what modern historical writing should be all about..

IN THE TIME OF THE DECLINE OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION

This year marks the 217th anniversary of the beginning of the Great French Revolution with storming of the Bastille on July 14th. An old Chinese Communist leader, the late Zhou Enlai, was once asked by a reporter to sum up the important lessons of the French Revolution. In reply he answered that it was too early to tell what those lessons might be. Whether that particular story is true or not it does contain one important truth. Militants today at the beginning of the 21st century can still profit from reading the history of that revolution.

Professor Lefebvre's two volume account of that revolution is still a good place to start. Although scholarship on various aspects of the French Revolution has mushroomed since his books first appeared, especially around the time of the 200th anniversary of the revolution, most of that work has been very specialized. After over 40 years these volumes still set the standard for a general overview of the convulsions of French and European society before the rise of the Napoleonic period.

The French Revolution, like its predecessor the American Revolution, is covered with so much banal ceremony, flag- waving, unthinking sunshine patriotism and hubris it is hard to see the forest for the trees. The Bastille action while symbolically interesting is not where the real action took place nor was it politically the most significant event. For militants that comes much later with the rise of the revolutionary tribunals and the Committee of Public Safety under the leadership of the left Jacobins Robespierre and Saint Just. Their overthrow in 1794 by more moderate members of their own party, in what is known as the Thermidorian reaction, stopped the forward progression of the revolution although it did not return it back to the old feudal society. The forces unleashed by the revolution, especially among the land hungry peasantry, made that virtually impossible. In short, as has happened before in revolutionary history, the people and programs which supported the forward advancement of the revolution ran out of steam. The careerists, opportunists and those previously standing on the sidelines took control until they too ran out of steam. Not for the first or last time, the precarious balance of the different forces in society clashed and called out for a strongman. Napoleon was more than willing to be obliging when that time came.

The values of the Enlightenment- the believe that human beings can more or less rationally order the way they organize society in the interest of social justice and human dignity, are under extreme attack today. These Enlightenment values are reflected in the successes and failures of the French revolution. So what can militants of the 21st century gather from those tumultuous experiences as we try to extend the gains of that revolution and defend Enlightenment values against the `bully boys and girls' of this world? The most obvious is that the very fact of the French revolution changed the whole nature of political discourse by the creation of a civil society. Today, that task may seem of little importance. However, at the time the vast majority of the population was treated by the old regime as a brute, silent herd. And was suppose to like it, to boot! Seem familiar.

The French Revolution also highlights the need to defend the revolution against both active internal counterrevolutionary elements of the old regime and foreign powers opposed to the new order, the new way of doing business in society. This necessity also occurred previously in the English revolution where continental powers allied with segments of the old royal establishment tried to use Ireland and Scotland as bases to return the Stuarts. Later, in the Russian revolution that same phenomenon occurred with the White Guards and a seemingly world-wide array of hostile powers. In short, the old order will not give up without a fight. We should have that lesson etched in our brains.

Probably the greatest service that Professor Lefebvre provides in his volumes is to encourage an understanding of the above-mentioned relationship of forces. That is, the policies of the various post-1989 governments in reaction to the various forces in Europe, particularly but not exclusively the British, that most certainly were trying overthrow the revolution and either return to the previous status quo or make France a subordinate client state. In fact, this writer argues that one cannot understand French domestic governmental policy in this period without an understanding of that interconnectedness. The various revolutionary governmental forms, culminating with the Committee of Public Safety under Robespierre, were increasingly charged with defense of the revolution by putting France on a multi-front war footing. That meant both raising troops, one way or another, and assuring the support of the sans-culottes and small peasant landowners by appropriate measures. Whether those governments did that well or poorly is up to the reader to decide. In any case, thanks Professor Lefebvre.

Good but assumes you already know much

Whether or not you agree with Lefebvre's analysis it cannot be denied that his account of events from 1789-1799 is informative and comprehensive. Lefebvre makes a strong case that the Revolution was dominated by the bourgeoisie.
