This is as good, or better, than the outrageoulsy priced textbooks. Tells you, concisely, everything you need to know about the different art periods. Now I can converse with my artist friends who received degrees ..... I didn't. If you're into art at all, it's fun to know this stuff.

Pretty much exactly what I expected - Art History, not pretty pictures

I saw this book started off with ancient art, which I really have no interest in, but was willing to force my way through it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised when the author almost ordered me to not read parts I wasn't interested in, and that most parts of the book were self contained. I think it really lives up to that.

I read the Kindle edition of this book, and I knew it'd be difficult to read the text and look at the artwork at the same time. I was very pleased to find I really didn't need to. The author did a great job of describing the important parts of the works and what was unique about them, so much so that most of the time I didn't bother actually looking at the photos unless they were incorporated into the text. And I think as long as the reader knows and expects the book to be about the history of art, and not just a collection of pretty pictures, they will be very pleased with this book.

About the Author
Fawzia Afzal-Khan is University Distinguished Scholar, Professor of English, and Director of Women and Gender Studies at Montclair State University, NJ. She is author and editor of four previous books, including the bestselling anthology Shattering the Stereotypes: Muslim Women Speak Out. She has written extensively on Pakistani culture and politics, and is a published playwright and poet. She is also a trained vocalist in the North Indo-Pak classical tradition.

Great Disappointment

I found the writing of this book appalling. The author treats us to a display of American slang and swearing, mixed in with tragic stories of Pakistani women, imitations of stream-of-consciousness prose, accounts of Pakistani politics and religious wars, her own poetry, along with bits and pieces of her sexual experiences. I found it a terrible hodgepodge written in a mix of styles. I will find it hard to finish reading the whole book.

Massive Disappointment

Being Pakistani, female and from Lahore, I had been looking forward to reading this book. Being a fan of the likes of Nadeem Aslam, Daniyal Mueenuddin, Kamila Shamsie, Mohsin Hamid, Mohd. Hanif, Amitav Ghosh, etc., I was somehow expecting this book to be just as well written, insightful and thought provoking. Alas! It was not to be. Even though the author is clearly a brilliant lady with lots of profound thoughts, I think she tried to achieve too many different objectives with this one book and in the process, achieved none. The characters were paper-thin with no insights on what made them tick so one could feel no sympathy for them, the socio-economic and political commentary was too sweeping and judgmental without enough facts to make it credible, there wasn't any introspection (how can one write a memoir without it?), and the covered time periods too fragmented to make any sense of. And finally, I found the entire description of someone threatening to sue if the book were ever published and the ensuing chain of events both distasteful and distracting.

Inaccurate, political, and distasteful

This is not a memoir, as the title might lead you to believe. It's a diatribe against Khan's pet peeves. The author's rage gets the better of her numerous times. The book is also inaccurate in places: women are not stoned to death in Pakistan. I don't know why some writers think that using foul language is a mark of good writing. I found the book very distasteful.

Markedly better than Ghouls of the Miskatonic

Please see my review of Ghouls of the Miskatonic for the context of fiction based on the role playing game Arkham Horror by Fantasy Flight Games.

Ghouls of the Miskatonic was a serviceable novelization of Arkham Horror game play. It was diverting without being memorable at all. Dance of the Damned is so much better than that. Alan Bligh has a good deal of experience writing scenarios for role playing games, and perhaps has written a few short stories, although I have never encountered him before; this is his first novel. Well he has done himself proud. Dance of the Damned transcends the source material and ends up being a corking good read in its on right.

Some housekeeping: like all of the Fantasy Flight Game novelizations, this is a mass market trade paperback, currently listed for $8.99 (I recollect when I was a kid and such books were less than a dollar, while now this price seems pretty reasonable...but I digress). The excellent cover art is by FFG's resident creative genius, Anders Finer. The text runs from page 7 to 329. A brief note but informative about the author is provided; they should do the same for the artist. Editing was tight; I don't recollect any typos.

Daisy Walker (an investigator from the rpg) works as a librarian and investigator at the Orne Library of Miskatonic University, although she seems so much more competent than that (why only becomes clear much later). She is contacted by a friend for her student days in Kingsport, a very worldly and somewhat wealthy Annabel Fawn. Annabel is in trouble; her boyfriend has vanished under mysterious circumstances and has left her with a very small but very potent artifact. Annabel needs a confidant and somewhere to lay low, and comes to Daisy for help in Arkham. In the meantime, tough PI Tony Morgan (another stalwart from the rpg) has just been involved in a rather bloody showdown and ends up in the employ of Mr. Shawcross, a shadowy power broker from Copperhead Industries. Mr. Shawcross makes Tony an offer he can't refuse, basically to track down Maxwell Cormac. It turns out Cormac is Annabel's boyfriend and he has taken something of great interest to Shawcross. You can see how the plot threads intersect. Several groups are trying to get Annabel's artifact, as Daisy struggles to make sense of everything including her own damaged memory, while Tony is hot on their trail. It rapidly becomes clear that powers beyond normal are being exercised (or are exercising their influence on our plane), and relief of human suffering is not one of their primary aims. The plot moves along propulsively, converging in escalating violence in a series of encounters in Kingsport.

I very much liked this book. The prose was crisp, the characters came alive and the dialogue was quite well written. I never thought I was reading a scenario from a rpg; the book worked well as a novel. I found it hard to believe Mr. Bligh is a novice at this. I particularly liked the vivid physical descriptions of Kingsport. The major action sequences were appropriately horrific. The cliff hanger ending (this is a trilogy after all) did leave me wanting more.

There are some things I didn't particularly like, although they did not put me off. For example, the Terrible Old Man of Kingsport puts in a few appearances as some sort of mysterious wizard of unclear motivation or allegiance. I could have lived without that; I guess it was added to connect the reader to HPL's Kingsport.

My bottom line is I am happy to recommend this to fans of Cthulhu mythos fiction in general, not just fans of Arkham Horror. I am looking forward to future Cthulhu mythos works by Mr. Bligh, not just the next two books in the Lord of Nightmares trilogy. This is a book I would like to get in a larger limited edition format, heavily illustrated by Mr. Finer.

Not bad, but not great.

This relatively short book spends a large amount of time setting-the-scene and ends rather abruptly. (Much like many Arkham horror games now that I think about it).

The author tends toward over-description and perhaps over-flexes his vocabulary muscles a bit to much, however the story moves along very well after the first 100 pages. There are a few moments reading where I really could not put it down, so kudos there.

Without spoiling the ending, the end is more abrupt and feels it was somewhat rushed to complete. Nevertheless, I will be purchasing the second volume.

It's a light read and a good first effort for a new author. I look forward to seeing the series develop.

A fun read

I picked this book up when it first came out and read it quickly. I always love a good quick story especially one related to cthulhu. The story flows well, the characters are developed enough to enjoy them and the writer keeps a sense of mystery and the unknown as the story unfolds. While not a classical cthulhu tale it is a fun read and well worth your time. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good urban fantasy or cthulhu style adventure tale.

MUCH better books available

I think the other reviewers must have confused this textbook with another one. This book sucks. They must have been enrolled in Krolik's class on AGN and were brown-nosing to get better grades. This textbook is overdense and you will find yourself reading pages and pages, but learning little about the physics of active galactic nuclei. At times, the work reads more like a philosophical treatise on observing methodology than a textbook to explain the observations and science behind active galactic nuclei. The material is outdated and some of the conclusions found within have since been disproven. The textbook does not discuss the current observations and controversies involved in the study of active galactic nuclei. Typically, when authors use graphics (pictures, plots, etc) they serve to illuminate the material and make it more understandable. Not so with this textbook, it is better to skip the graphics altogether because they do not help in the least. The mathematical proofs are not well-developed here and do not aid in the understanding of the physics.

I highly recommend Bradley Peterson's "An Introduction to Active Galactic Nuclei" over this textbook. Peterson's book might be thinner (because he sticks to the material and does not digress), but it is much better. It is more up to date and clearly explains observations of AGN and then develops the science behind their operation. The mathematics in this textbook are started at a more fundamental level, but are better developed to allow for a clearer understanding of the physics.

If you read Krolik's tome, you will walk away with a a great dislike of AGN. I was required to buy this book for the course Krolik was teaching at Hopkins. My greatest regret was that I was unable to sell this textbook back to the bookstore.

Great astrophysics by Krolik

Prof. Julian Krolik has done it again! His new book "Active Galactic Nuclei: From the Central Black Hole to the Glactic Environment" is a great reference source for astrophyisics, especially in Active Galactic Nuclei. While the reading can be a bit dense and convoluded, the topic is so involving that I couldn't put the book down. If you, like me, love Active Galactic Nuclei, then this is a MUST BUY book. Also, if you are taking one of Prof. Krolik's graduate classes at Hopkins, then I strongly suggest that you read up on his favorite topic. Anyone who buy's the book will NOT be dissapointed with it!!!

Complete coverage of a fascinating topic

This book provides an amazing amount of depth on the exciting topic of AGNs. Although a bit heavy on theory at times (which is to be expected from Krolik), the book covers every topic imaginable, from black hole physics to accretion disk structure. If you work in the field of AGNs, or you want to learn more about the subject, this book is a MUST READ. However, I would only recommend it for advanced undergrads or above.
