A memoir of race and education, this is the story of a girl who grew up and out of the Cleveland projects in the 1960s and '70s. While growing up in Cleveland, young Charlise Lyles experienced turbulent events including race riots and a neighborhood murder. Yet she was inspired to appreciate literature at a young age, and she spent her days reading—and also often searching for the estranged father who taught her that love of learning. Despite starting in the “slow class” at an aging school on Cleveland's east side, Lyles had a thirst for knowledge and drive for success that would open a door to new opportunities. Granted a scholarship to a prestigious prep school in a wealthy suburb, the vibrant teenager finds herself presented with a bewildering set of new challenges—and a new direction in life.

Review
A memoir told through evocative language and with clear-eyed precision. Lyles writes about her experiences with both America’s mid-20th-century urban racial dysfunction and her own intellectual blooming . . . She moves back and forth with grace and an ever-growing awareness of how her parents created a smart, well-read girl in spite of poverty . . . This is essential reading for all American teens. (School Library Journal 2009-04-01)
A fascinating literary memoir from the viewpoint of a little girl who did dare to disturb the universe she was born into . . . Lyles has given a vivid picture, one laced with generosity, humor and insight, of growing up poor without giving up. (Laura Kennelly Morning Journal 2008-12-14)
Blacks and whites sharing the same schools are a foregone conclusion in the modern day, but as recent as forty years ago, major challenges were faced . . . [A] story of arriving in an extreme majority white prep school during such a time it was completely unheard of. Facing a new set of challenges while maintaining a desire to learn, Lyles’ story is a moving one indeed . . . A solid piece on those who faced challenges during the civil rights era. (Midwest Book Review 2009-01-28)
Lyles speaks to the experiences many of us have of growing up Black. She touches on issues of having an estranged parent, the wealth of living in poverty, navigating two very different social universes and finding one’s proper place. (Vanessa Jones Call & Post 2009-02-05)
Lyles straddles multiple worlds as she comes of age, and her longing for the attention of a feckless father registers on every page. Her clear, detail-rich memoir shows how she constructed an identity—before graduating from Smith College and eventually returning to Cleveland. (Karen Long The Plain Dealer 2009-05-31)
An enthralling slice-of-life look at what the city once was, what it has become, and what life was like and continues to be for those in the forgotten projects . . . The politics of racial equality—the black militants that brought order to the projects vs. the idealism of her mother—tumble within Lyles as she grapples with what it is to be an Afro-American woman . . . An engrossing read and highly recommended. (Akhirnya Akhirnya Pajiba.com 2011-02-07)

Wonderful story, beautifully written
By Lynn Ann Gries
I read this book a few years ago and I still buy it to share with teenage girls whenever I need a birthday or holiday gift. It's a terrific story about a little girl's love of reading, her relationship with a father who cannot provide for the family, her early teen years spent in the Cleveland housing projects and, finally, her experience attending a fancy, "country day" type prep (high) school in the late 1970s. I found it interesting that the housing authority that managed "the projects" promised their residents all sorts of "programs" to create better lives for themselves. Of course, none of these programs delivered. What did deliver for Ms. Lyles was the public library. Every summer she took out loads of books and read, read, read. But this love of reading was never nurtured in the classroom and she was ultimately placed in classes with the "slow" kids, mainly for disciplinary reasons. Thank goodness one teacher in her junior High recognized her abilities and pushed her to excel. It just goes to show that education is a contact sport, a personal connection between teacher and student. And that we ought to be paying our teachers appropriately for the impact that they make on the lives of our youth...the future.

Proud to know the author

Sometimes I buy books and don't get around to reading them right away. Such is the case with this book, and I'll justify my slowness in getting around to it by saying it was definitely worth the wait--well-written and miles above some of the semi-fictitious, superficial memoirs that have been published in recent years. Charlise and I are the same age, and I spent much of my growing up in Ohio as well, in a working-class neighborhood where the local black high school wasn't up to par. So like the author, I and my siblings rode the bus across town--and though we didn't go to a tony private school, we did attend a mostly-white public high school. Our circumstances weren't identical, but the overarching theme of greater opportunity through high-quality education holds true. I can relate to so much of what Charlise writes about and can only say that these stories of 'our generation,' the first to have access to the type of education that generations of whites take for granted, need to be told, and read by everyone no matter what race.

Amazing story - amazing young woman.

Rating of "I love it" really isn't what 5 stars means in this context. For me it meant "I was blown away by it!" Humbled - sobered. Charlise Lyles is one tough cookie - without the roughness that that usually implies. The telling of her early life is a reality check for anyone who thinks they know what it's like to find themselves in her circumstances. I served on the board of our local A Better Chance program and wish I had read her book earlier. Every board member - resident director - tutor - host family - teacher - should have a better idea of what these students have gone through before they arrive in this foreign "promised" land they find themselves in. Her suggestion regarding more orientation is really needed and once they arrive there should be better back-up - moral support - an omsbudman - to help bridge the gap between here and there. We have a lot to learn. We were flying blind when we started our program in 1973 but I'm glad we didn't let that stop us.. Wish she had written - or will write another book.
Forgot to mention that I found this book by accident while looking for "The Diary of A. N." There was no record of that book anywhere - but Amazon located this similar book (subject matter) for me. I read it in the first 24 hours after it arrived - then passed it on to my husband who did the same - then to another friend who had also served on the ABC board - he read it in record time too. I intend to make it known to many more people. Thank you Amazon - thank you Charlise Lyles.
