Incredibly Useful

As an early elementary music teacher with a strong singing background, I was pleasantly suprised at how easy to use and understand this book is. Music theory has never been one of my strengths, most music resource books are so "wordy" you can hardly get through with an understanding of what is being told to you, but this book is clear, straight forward, and an innovative approach to listening to music. For the first time in my life, I truly listened to what I was hearing, not just trying to remember for a brief second before I could grab a pencil and notate what I had just heard,- but actually listening. I was able to do things I didn't know I could do - like analyze a section of music just through listening and trusting in what I was hearing. Now I can incorporate that same "sound to symbol" technique in my teaching with the step-by-step teaching sequence that is provided throughout the book and make sure that I give my students the necessary guidence to slow down and just listen.

From Sound to Symbol: Fundamentals of Music
Having read many many books on music fundamentals, this one stands out above them all! From Sound to Symbol gave me a thorough understanding of the inner-workings of music, without feeling strained by a dull textbook. Whats separates From Sound to Symbol is its use of a more right brain approach beginning with Sound along with fun imaginative exercises that stimulate! The brilliant idea of using music from a variety of styles i.e. rock, classical, jazz, folk etc shows the love and care that went into this truly innovative book. From Sound to Symbol also comes with a companion CD which contains a multitude of exercises that concretely review each Chapter and instills the material just learned in a concise complete manner. The singing lessons (as singing being the essence of all music), are based on Kodaly methods and for me is the heart of the book. Using Solfege I feel is a must for any beginner. Please get this book if you are serious about really getting down the fundamentals of music and learning to sing, read and have fun with music!

Aural Bootcamp!

This book is awesome! It has an incredible approach to teaching aural skills that WORKS!! Aural skills are difficult to teach if not handled properly; so get this book and learn how to go about this. You will learn so much as you go through this book, and then take that knowledge and those skills directly into the classroom. Aural skills are at the basis of any music appreciation -- we have to be able to comprehend what we hear before we can appreciate it. So giving this gift of teaching a more aural-based approach to music (instead of the tried and imperfect visual-based approach) could mean the world to your students. Get the book. Go through aural Bootcamp. Then put your students in Bootcamp. You'll never want to go back to a visual-based teaching approach again.
