Terrific book!

This was an excellent companion to our children's unit on Lewis and Clark. The book was very engaging and the illustrations were truly beautiful. It provided our children with an informative yet highly enjoyable account of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The book was written from the perspective of Seaman, Lewis's dog, and this allowed for an interesting view of the events that occurred on the expedition. My children also enjoyed using the attached Seaman bookmarker. This was a very cute addition to a well-written and delightful book.

I used this book with my homeschool curriculum and my children loved it, the pictures are great.the content of this book helps to bring everyone for the journey coming from the eyes of such a lovable Newfoundland.

Review of Seaman's Journal

Seaman is a Newfoundland dog from Pennsylvania. He is large, furry and protective by nature. Seaman's Journal: On the Trail with Lewis and Clark by Patricia Reeder Eubank (Ideals, 2002) is the account of a very special dog who was chosen to accompany Lewis and Clark on their 1804 journey to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. Early on in the tale, Seaman proudly states, "I am in charge of Lewis." He takes his duty seriously, but makes time to play with Native American children, chase prairie dogs and squirrels, and journel frequently. His pawprint signature at the bottom of each page is a great touch. Seaman's adventure is very educational. He meets many Native American tribes, including the Sioux, who eat dogs. The inviting watercolor pictures depict Seaman's activities, and there are relevant artifacts around the border of each page, such as a close-up of a Sioux chief in feather headdress, a tomahawk and an American flag. The book is so much fun, you'll forget that you're learning!
