About the Author
After completing his BSc in Mathematical Statistics and Operational Research at Exeter, Keith Anderson worked for some years as a systems developer, most recently at Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt. He then did an MSc in Investment Analysis at Stirling, where he won the Morley Prize as the top academically in his year. For his PhD at the ICMA Centre, Reading University, Keith showed that different ways of calculating the Price-Earnings ratio could significantly improve investor returns. He worked as a lecturer at Durham University Business School for two years before moving to York in 2008. Keith has written a number of books, papers and articles.

well-written and interesting

OK - the only previous review was completely negative. Having borrowed the book through my local library, and very much enjoyed reading it, I added it to my Amazon cart to consider buying it for my library to read again. So I was pretty mystified by that review. At first I thought, well, there's another of my lazy-minded, Americo-centric compatriots...ugh. Now I suspect it's a pre-emptive strike...the suggestions in this book make so much sense and are so straightforward, maybe Jim Rogers is afraid too many people will read the book and weaken the strategy! I held off writing this review to see if anyone else would chime in, but I'm finally stepping in primarily out of a sense of fairness. In strong contrast to Mr. Rogers, I thought the book was very entertainingly and accessibly written, and I wasn't bothered by the focus on non-US markets, since most of the investing books available cover the US thoroughly. When necessary, the author does reference US data, so there's no real confusion about what the implications of his strategy are for US investors. The author gives interesting background on the history of the P/E as an indicator and basis for investing, and adds his own work. I'm a relatively meat-and-potatos investor, and I'm not sure I'll follow through on his approach (although I'd be very interested in a mutual fund based on it), but I came away at least feeling better informed about what P/E can tell me about stocks and funds. And how can you complain about an investing book that's actually fun to read??

More for a British audience

I was disappointed in this book. The book is written more for a British audience than American. The book uses British pound symbols instead of dollars, the appendix contains EPS and P/E for the FTSE 100 index instead of an American index, it has section titles like: "The P/E effect in the UK" and differences in spelling convention like capitalisation vs capitalization, etc. It may have been because of the above that I thought the book was difficult to follow and understand.

About the Author

Joan Chittister is an internationally known author and lecturer, and the executive director of Benetvision: A Resource and Research Center for Contemporary Spirituality. Best Book I've Read on Aging Gracefully

In my mid-forties, I'm committed to aging well. I've seen how so many in our culture age, and I'm committed to do better, not just physically, but emotionally, as well. For me, a big part of that shift is ensuring that my mind-space is in a good place, and that largely translates (again, for me) into not trying to chase the fountain of youth, but rather, for celebrating the gift of years, and for being my best self at this given moment in my life history, wherever that may be. This book? Is such a gift in that respect. I've read a number of books on aging now, and this has been one of the most beautifully insightful, in fact, I had initially borrowed it from the library, but wound up purchasing it as I very much want to underline and make margin notes, as I'm sure I will refer to it time and again. I highly recommend this lovely, poignant work, that also happens to be wonderfully written.

Turning 70 was the starting point when she began to see changes in her energy and interests. The importance of meditation is expressed. Joan Chittester writes so clearly there leaves no doubt this is not theory on her part. She has lived
some of it already, knows elders who've told their story or whom she has observed, and has researched
the topic carefully. The wisdom with which she builds her case is both down-to-earth and accessible to
elders of all backgrounds - and professionally researched, giving teeth and credibility. The way the book
is divided into short chapters on given topics, allows the reader to take on the topic in small pieces, the
way you would eat a course of a meal and allow time to digest it before going on. Through the lenses of the
different topics, the main points are shown to be relevant any way you look at them. This book is a "must
read" for all people advancing in years or who have loved ones who are. It should be required reading for
anyone entering the "young old" (65-74) years as Joan describes them. The best part is that she's writing for

About the Author
Alan Strachan was born in Edinburgh, worked for the Government, deciding that was not what he wanted to do. He became a keeper at the Zoo, moved to Botswana with an animal capture outfit, then to South Africa. He was married to his late wife Marcia for 32 years when tragically she was killed in a motor car accident. They had two children, Samantha and Amanda. Alan has remarried to a Swedish girl, Linda who shares the same passions as Alan. They both live in North West Province with their five dogs and 12 marmosets.

Definitely get this book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I evidently had some preconceived ideas about it being quite a serious matter mostly regarding cheetahs and the campaign to prevent their extinction, but I should have looked more closely at the photograph on the front cover- it provides a big clue about Mr. Strachan's sense of humour and his love for animals.

This is the very personal autobiography of a born story teller with a great sense of humour, and his irreverence and enthusiasm for poking fun at life had me chuckling from the start. Anyone who enjoys humorous tales, animals or people who chart their own path instead of obediently following rules will like this book, even if he/she has no particular interest in cheetahs or conservation. To be honest, I had thought the book would be more specifically about cheetahs, and of course there were many, many tales of working with these beautiful cats, but it turned out to be much more than that. The first portion of the book is filled with anecdotes of the author's escapades from childhood to his first job with wild animals, and the remainder of the book focuses on his life experiences, both personal and professional, as he worked with animals in various capacities.

I found it very interesting to see how attitudes and accepted practices regarding animals have changed in the past decades, and the stories of the author's experiences with an amazing variety of species kept me reading with great interest far into the wee hours. It was also fascinating to read about life in Africa- so different from my North American life.

I'd also like to point something out that Mr. Strachan did not draw special attention to: for decades he has played an extremely important role in the effort to save the cheetah (and African Wild Dogs/Painted Wolves) from extinction, and I suspect he has had more firsthand experience with more cheetah than just about anyone else worldwide. Due to ever increasing pressures from mankind, cheetahs remain in grave peril of extinction and Mr. Strachan, at great personal cost and past the age many people retire, continues to work on increasing their odds of survival. I hope his contributions will become more widely recognized during his lifetime

I also hope readers will encourage others to buy this book, and contact Mr. Strachan to find out how to help save this wonderful species. Alan and his wife, photographer and writer, Linda Rosenlof (http://Yourcheetahspot.co.za) working on several projects, including a book and photography exhibit, focusing on cheetah and conservation presentations. A great heartfelt and inspiring story of and by a man who was able to do his own wild thing; away from the office and the humdrum of modernity, and who in the process, almost singlehandedly, saved an iconic species of this endangered planet of ours. Couldn't put the book down; learning about the ups and downs of the life, the family and the beloved cheetahs (amongst other animals) of such an unassuming, humble and rare person. An amazing life and feat, told in a 'by the campfire' style of writing. Reminded me of my Gerald Durrell reading days.

I loved the book and really appreciate Alan's devotion to these wonderful cats that could well become extinct in the next 50 years or less. In the footsteps of George and Joy Adamson, Alan's devotion to the care and conservation of these magnificent animals doing the best he could while politics and human greed often times ran against him he soldiered on as best he could. We need more like him! Years ago I got acquainted with four Sumatran Tiger cubs and that woke me up to the plight of the large cats and the need for more workers in the field. If I were younger, I could have lived a contented life doing this type of work I just didn't know how to go about it. Thank you Alan for doing true yeoman's work and making a difference as the opportunity presented.

Like chocolate!

Yes, you can read it all in one sitting. I confess I did and I loved it. But if you go back and read the lovely, deep thoughts and the beautiful pictures in small bites, one poem a day perhaps, or two if you really need inspiration, it is so much richer and more enjoyable. Like chocolate, it is deeply satisfying and almost addictive. I can't tell you which poem is my favorite because that depends on the mood I'm in when I begin to read. It might be one that gives me hope despite a sense of darkness or it might be one that reminds me to see and sense beyond the obvious.The book is beautiful, beyond the usual volume of words and pictures, but there's a warmth to it, almost a physical kind, that infuses your being as you read and absorb. When a day is wonderful, I might have something chocolate to celebrate it; when the day wasn't good, I reach for chocolate as solace; when I don't know what to make of the day, chocolate helps me reflect. So does "Gather Up Your Soul." I can't explain either of them in terms of education, nutrition, information, or anything your body and spirit actually need. But they offer something you crave. And they just make you feel better. You'll be glad you bought this book. Be sure to write your name on the flyleaf before lending it because your friend won't want to give it back.

This book can be read in one sitting, and almost inspires you to do so: each beautifully crafted poem is accompanied by a perfect image, and these two things together, the poetry & the imagery, gently coax the mind into a meditative reverie. Each and every poem has something funny, sad, beautiful, sweet, tender, vulnerable, wise, or touching to offer. The arrangement of the poems and images keeps moving you deeper into the book, deeper into the human experience. Bart has done nothing less here than lay out, in words and images, what it is to be human. Within these poems are emotions we can all relate to, the very essence of being human, and this is the quiet power of this small volume. It reminds me of a black & white book of photography & poetry I found laying about the house one day as a child (I can't remember the name of the book or author but I remember the book clearly!) that I read in one gulp and then would come back to every so often because it soothed me. Bart's book is like that; if you should just happen upon it one day, unexpectedly, it will probably change your life. This is a book you can read over and over again, and be soothed by.

The answers are inside you

Sometimes we need a few well chosen words to stir us out of complacency, to make us rethink our place in the world, to encourage us to be a little better than we were yesterday. "Gather Up Your Soul" does just that. Bartholomew John Erbach's verses speak to the reader that way a trusted friend might: gently prodding, supportively encouraging, asking just the right question at just the right time.

A few of my favorite lines are from Equinox:
"What winds will whip into my life
When will I raise my hand
To say, okay, I need to pray"

I read these poems and found myself reflecting on ways in which my own soul was having doubts or troubles, the kinds of things we all worry about on a daily basis: am I making the right choices in my career? Am I being attentive enough to my partner? Am I instilling the right values in my children? The beauty of these poems is not that they contained the answers to my questions, but they helped me see the answers were already inside me. They encouraged me to trust my own instinct.

Awesome. I only started by reading the first ten pages or so, but I can already tell that this is the book I've been looking for for a long time. I owned Jody's Alfred beginning jazz book/DVDs awhile back and really liked it: Jody is good at taking jazz concepts and really breaking them down to their foundations, to easier understand them. I am really looking forward to getting into this book, because I can tell that it will help me improve at jazz soloing if I spend the time and effort.
